OK, so I have a mini USB coming out of my car 12 volt outlet that is used to charge my cell phone (external link).

Yesterday my daughter looks at my G10 and notices the mini usb port (external link) (used for uploading pics). So she starts to insert the cell charger mini USB. I stopped her before she got it connected.

What would have happened?
Can I charge the G10 by doing this?

Is the answer the same to other cameras such as 1d series?

USB ports are generally rated at 5 volts and a max of 500 ma, or 1/2 amp so I doubt that it would have damaged anything in the camera but I also doubt that it could be used to charge the battery since the energy would go to several circuits in the camera rather than directly to the battery. It would be like trying to recharge your car battery with a low amperage charger but with the headlights on.

Whether the USB is connected to a cigarette lighter plug or your computer it will be sending the same amount of power over the line. Unless your CLA is defective there would be no risk of damage to the camera, and if it were defective then your phone would already be fried.

However, I don't think any phone allow the batteries to be charged through their USB ports.

Thanks for your feedback.
My family has three different cell phones, they all charge via mini USB.

I just glad to hear that a camera probably won't be harmed if a powered mini usb chord is accidentally plugged into a camera interface port.

No, you can't charge the G10 that way, but no, you won't hurt it by hooking it up that way.

General principles...

  1. Not all devices are wired to take power via USB connections; some require external power supplies connected to specific power sockets
  2. the 'voltage' (and which pin of the USB connector it is present on) is standardized on USB devices at +5v; 'power' (rate at which voltage is supplied) is not.
  3. Some devices recognize 'authorized charger' vs. generic USB connections, and will not charge from generic connections

My Sony moviecam will not charge at all when only connected to USB, it needs an external power supply on the correct power socket; it operates without the external power supply, but it won't charge up.
My Motorola cell phone uses USB port to charge but it will not charge from an 'unathorized' charger; yet it does not recognize all generic chargers as 'unauthorized', some work fine!
