Here is my first outdoor water photo with my Sigma 70-200 and XT. I shoot primarily indoor sports such as wrestling which allow me to get extreme closeups. I shot this off my riverbank and approximately 80'-100' away. I shot in manual mode with these settings,
Shutter 1/1000, F/5, ISO 100 and cropped 100%

Any ideas or suggestions on how to improve are welcome.

My sister, the professional baker and cake decorator once told me that my camera takes great pics. My reply was that I thought her oven baked great cakes.

FWIW, the image looks a little overexposed. Look at the letters on the cowling and the upper part of the rider's arms - almost no detail there. Admittedly, bright mid-day sun is a very challenging situation. Plus the rider's head is a little soft (not really the rider's head, but your image of the rider's head).

Composition wise, I'd prefer to have the rider coming at me, or at least on the quarter. This way we'd get to see his face and his expression, which brings up another point: he's not doing anything particularly interesting here - just riding straight, kicking up a bit of a rooster tail. I'd like to see him showing that he's having a great time - in this image, he looks like a bus driver or like he's on one of those swan boats in a city pond. I mean, he doesn't need to be getting big air, but at least show him carving a turn or something.

The other boat in the background is a bit distracting, too.

Sorry to sound harsh, but there really isn't much compelling in your shot.
