I don't get out nearly as often as I like, but yesterday, I went out with my 10 year old son to test his new camera out. He did not get anything good yet (he is still practicing holding a 100-300 still while he fires off the shutter, maybe a monopod is next for him).....but I got a shot of a baby great horned owl using flash as it was after sunset and a bit dark... I had been watching him in the nest for a while. He finally took a flight last night, but it was too dark to get any night flight shots. I did manage to get one of him right near his nest. Priot to the GHO, prio to the GHO, we were at one of the burrowing owl nesting holes. They were happy to pose for a family shot minus mom and pop. I do need to get out more, especially before this Florida Heat

I hope you enjoyed these...Such fun the burrowing owls!

Love that last shot! We've photographed Burrowing Owls on many occasions on our trips to Southwest Florida, but have yet to time one to capture owlets. Great work.
Cheers,

Love that last one. Every time I see these young owls, I realize that this is probably where the old tales of trolls and leprechauns originated from. :)

Thanks Karen,,,these are the same ones I gave you directions to on one of your recent trips here. The chics hatch in late April and are there till early July every year....

Last week of April they hatch and will hang around till July. Mid May thru late June seems to be the best time for photos. By June, they have gotten acustomed to the many visitors (people) and will "pose" for you. Many here actually nest close to the street and near our homes. I guess this protects them from thier hunters, snakes and the likes...

LOL Mith...the last is my favorite also...I wish the light was better...they were in the shadows of the setting sun which made those pupils big and dark...no direct sunlight to help with the light

Thanks to all for the comments.

Very cute shots, and that third one is just hilarious. I'd have #2 printed, framed and hung if it were mine.
