What is the best software for 2D panorama?

I use currently Auto pano pro, but I want to test others before I buy one.

I didn't like at all photoshop for complex panorama with a lot of distortion.

IMHO, the best ones are: Hugin, PTAssembler, PTGui

I lean towards PTGui - it can be easy, yet it gives you full control if needed. It's also the most expensive, by far.

You can take my 100-400 L away when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers.

All decent stithers are based on the Father of Stitchers, Panorama Tools, which is a free but discontinued product without human interface. Hugin, PTAssembler and PTGui are graphic interfaces to Panorama Tools (PTGui rewrote much of PT).

I prefer PTAssembler, it does everything needed, it is quite cheap (much cheaper than PTGui) and its creator, Max Lyons is very responsive. There is an excellent forum there too.

These products do perform automatic stitching as well, but theat is not the point. In order to have full control over the process, one should perform the steps manually; however, that reauires a betterunderstanding of the concept than most pano makers do, and of course it takes more time. Occasional pano makers should stick to Autopano or Photoshop.

I just took pictures with my Nikon, and left all the details to AcroPano Panorama software. I am not saying its the best one, but it works so well for me.

I use Microsoft ICE (free!), but I really have no experience with anything else, and I rarely stitch.. so take that for what it's worth.. :)
