Hey folks,

I currently have the Tamron 75-300 macro lens, and am wondering if it would be worth replacing it with the Canon 55-250 IS lens?

I also have the Canon 17-85 IS and the Canon 50mm II 1.8 lenses. I have a tripod, but normally don't pull it out, so a lot of my shots with the Tamron are coming out blurry. With the IS on the 55-250, I've read you can use slower shutter speeds as opposed to going 1/500 or faster with the Tamron lens.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Al

Yes, IS will let you use a slower shutter speed and not suffer "camera shake" but it will not help you if your subject is moving by "stopping action"

From what I understand, the Canon lens is supposed to be a good value, but I never used it.

Can't say much about the Tammy as I've never shot with it, but my dad has the 55-250 and I was quite impressed with it's performance. Nice lens and great value.

Yes. I would also suggest that you think about replacing your 17-85mm IS with the 18-55mm IS kit lens. I know this sounds crazy, but tests have proven that the new 18-55mm IS actually outperforms the 17-85mm IS (albeit with a cheaper build and no USM). I picked up mine for $100. You should be able to sell your 17-85mm for $250-300.

Just a friendly suggestion if you need more money to put towards something else.

The 55-250 is supposed to give you up to four stops of image stabilization meaning that instead of needing a 1/500 sec shutter speed to avoid camera shake blurring, you'd need only 1/30 sec. In practice, you can probably expect more like 2-3 stops but that still lets you use a 4 to 8 times slower shutter speed than you'd need without IS.

i will go a different route, and say save up, and replace it with a 70-200L f4 and then a kenko/tamron or canon 1.4 tc

...

Yes.

The IS maximizes his utility essentially with static subjects.
As has already indicated DeCeccoNET.

The canon 55-250 is good but the 70-200 L is on another level.
