I'll be the dissenter here. The background only detracts from what could have been an excellent image reminiscent of the iconic photo of Y.A. Tittle. The picture should have been about the goalie, not the signs in the background.

Everything about the player suggests that this is an important moment. Everything about the background suggest that this a trivial frat party.

Wrong! I'm sorry, but you couldn't be any further from correct.

The back ground is what makes this image special. Not a Frat party!

The theme of the image is okay but tecehnically this is a poor photogrpah. The goalkeeper is very soft and the image appears oversaturated.

I was wondering about that too, but then thought it was a PP choice.
I like the photo. The goalie is very lonely out there on the field with no other players in the shot and the crowd is very animated. I don't think he needs to be in focus. There is a lot of tennsion in this image and that's good.
I think, it were me, maybe I would have cropped the right side a touch more.

If the goaltender is not in focus then the image would most likely wind up in the Recycle Bin of most photo editors. There is no action going on in the scene that would cause the photographer to have to shoot at an aperture like 2.8 to get a high shutter speed so I see no reason why he could not have shot at an aperture that would have put both the goalie and background in focus. As far as the saturation, the grass looks unnaturally bright green, the reds are very saturated as is the face of the goaltender.

OK Chris, fine, you don't like it. That's great. But if you count the number of people that this photograph does appeal to then you are largely outnumbered. I'm glad that you like super sharp, clean sports shots, but this shot is more than that and you just don't get it. Get over it already.

Maybe he just got caught up in the moment and didn't think to reset his apature. Haven't you ever done that?
Or maybe he did mean to do it. You don't know any more than I do.

You're photo editor comment is not fully valid. What happens if the crowd is the story? Then your argument why this isn't a good photo is wrong.

If you and or the photographer can't take criticism then don't post your photos to a public forum. Also, I don't really give a rats rear-end that the photograph appeals to the masses and I was outnumbered as that's not the point. The photographer posted the image and I posted my critique. Have a wonderful day.

No Chris that is the point. More people liked the photo, so it is successful.
Are we suppose to be honored that you came down from Mt. Canon Big Lens to pass judgement over all of us?
It seems to me that it's you that can't take a critique.

So here is where we will part ways and agree to disagree. You have a wonderful day too...

And Chris, You really need to learn to think outside the box. Its cool that you can take good stock images, as shown with your sportsshooter page, but GOOD photographers are looking for a STORY to tell and not just freezing a moment. Youve got to look PAST the single capture of a ball. Any monkey with a 1D and a long lens can make that happen. It doesnt take much skill (lets be honest here...). What takes skill, what wins awards, and what creates icons in photography are MOMENTS.

The picture here is most definitely a moment that tells a story. Could it be composed better? Yeah probably but it is still a good capture of a moment. Ill take that over a million standard tackles or wide open receivers making two handed catches.

The beauty and tragedy of a forum...people can and shall give their feedback, but not everyone is able to communicate elegantly. The biggest trouble is when they generalize as if things simple were exactly how they believe it should be. It's never really like that! But then you have to forgive those, who are not wise enough, yet, to express themselves in public.
Also, every advice, even if improper in a specific context, offers ideas. It all should be balanced, so people don't get pushed into dropping what they intuitively would do and follow some wonna-be guru. However, there will be a moment, where some other idea applies and it offers nothing but a new option or opportunity for a different thought.

Last but not least: Be nice! We love to listen to each other, if the benefit is the generation and support of motivation!

Canon 500D, Sigma 18-250mm & no clue how to make the best of either, yet!
