Appreciate your suggestion. But where do we buy used lens? What is the reliability?

regards
Brainage2

adorama.com, keh.com and bhphoto.com all sell used lenses. Lenses can last for quite a while, and all of those places grade the lenses you know what you are getting.

Hi Pros

I made up my mind about the Body 50D.

Can you help me in narrowing down to 2 lenses? One Wide angle and one telephoto for everyday shooting of kids , family and vacation.

regards

I have the 50D and bought it with the 28-135mm from Costco...I highly recommend the 28-135mm for everyday walk-around use and if you're a beginner like me...the package I got was a good way to get familiar with my camera and with my shooting style...

Also, if you have the time, you could rent lenses from local camera shops...I'm sure if the shop is anywhere half decent they can offer you lots of advice on which lens is right for your usage...I don't know where you live, but there's a camera shop in Palo Alto, CA that hosts seminars held by lens manufacturers like Tamron and by Canon, too...just something you can look into before buying all this equipment...

This is what I"m picking up this weekend. I'm hoping the 28-135mm is a good lens.

Go look at the pics in the "Lens Sample Photo Archive" forum. Then when you get the camera and lens, go out and take some photos with it. Don't obsess over pixel peeping, shooting graphs/tests, microscopic detail in 100% crops, etc. - shoot the photos you like to shoot, then look at them. If it looks good, it is good.

Are there better lenses? Sure there are. Are there worse lenses? Yep. Unless you're using an abhorrently poor lens, the person taking the photo matters a lot more than the lens itself.

^ +1 the 28-135 is a pretty good lens, just not quite wide enough on the crop sensor.

If I had no lenses at all, I would probably get the kit lens (since it's MUCH cheaper to buy it with the body, and you can always sell it later for what you paid for it with the body), and then add the 50mm 1.8, and if budget was an issue, the 18-55 IS, and the 55-250 IS are both outstanding lenses for the price. But the 28-135 is decently long, so I would start with that, and see if you need to go any longer after you've lived with the 28-135 for a while. And I'd be surprised if you didn't find yourself wanting wider, so the 18-55 IS is a probably, but again, get the kit and see if you're left wanting. And then I say the 50mm 1.8 because if you're shooting kids indoors, you can push the ISO to 3200 on the 50D and still get the shot at f/1.8. Your other option would be an external flash, but that's not really something for beginners. So again, get the kit and go from there to see what you're wanting, and come back with your needs and a budget, and I'm sure we can help you spend your money wisely.

Canon has some rebates going on now, maybe.

Anyway-

I have a 50D.
For what you are doing, I would suggest buying a new 50D from a legitimate source. BHPhotoVideo, Amazon, etc.

Get the body only plus a Canon 85mm/1.8 lens.
If the budget is still OK, then also the 580II EX flash unit.

That would be a good way to start out.

You can add lenses later as funds are available.

Good luck.
:)
