Recently inherited an XTi and after some searching around went ahead and purchased the 17mm-85 to pair it with. I have been using an SD550 for about three years.

Am I really going to see a WOW factor when taking this step forward in technology?

Depends on how you use the camera. I mean, in terms of image quality the XTi will definitely be able to give you more.

In terms of better composition and interesting pictures, well that's all you!

I seen a bunch of threads where someone purchases a DSLR and expects immediate results without learning how to use it. The camera will produce the WOW factor if you invest the time and money to get there. I look back at my first pictures taken from a DSLR and they were no better than a P&S. Learn how to use all the settings and how to produce pictures that are predictable in result (see a picture you want to take and be able to capture it correctly), and you'll see your WOW.

I would agree with you Rick.

If the OP keeps it on Auto and lets the camera make all the choices then it is basically a glorified P&S with interchangable lenses.

If you learn the basics (exposure triangle, composition, hand holding technique, etc) then the DSLR will give you huge rewards in image quality and results.
