MONOPOD and IS:
As mentioned, IS on monopod of course.

If you intend to shoot a lot of panning shots, then go for mode 2.. otherwise mode 1 is fine.

TRIPODS and IS:
Please do not confuse turning IS off when mounted to a tripod as a rule of thumb!
Many of the best Canon IS lenses have a Tripod mode.. and IS can and should be left on in certain circumstances.

More info on this in the EF LEns FAQ .. the section about IS.

Which is why it should be turned off. It's on only if you think you're gonna move in basically the only directions it can move: panning :) hence, mode 2.

You've lost me here, your saying if you aren't going to "move" you should turn IS off when on a monopod?

if you are just panning -- i.e., you are a hardcore panner -- i would use 2 otherwise use mode 1.

i've learned the hard way that if you are doing long exposures turn IS off on even the lenses that sense IS.

I don't understand Rodinal's reasoning either. Movement on a monopod can be either vertical or horizontal - so surely Mode ! is the obvious choice?

Tell me that when you have your camera and lens mounted on a monopod it does not at least jiggle vertically. And, you can't sway back and forth? Sideways is not the only movement possible on a monopod.

Tripod Is should be off,
Monopod Is should be On.

Yes - always use the IS when on a monopod - it doesn't matter which generation IS that the lens is equipped with.

However the use of IS when tripod mounted depends upon which generation IS you are equipped with. Older generations such as on the 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens will cause feedback when tripod mounted and will degrade image. Newer IS such as on the 70-200mm f/4L IS lens can effectively be used when tripod mounted and will help any movement from wind or mirror slap.

I use my 70-200,mm f/4L IS lens on a Canon 30D mounted on a modified Slik Pro 330 DX tripod which I have modified with a short center column and an Adorama Flashpoint F-1 Magnesium ball head. The tripod/head combo weighs just one pound fourteen ounces and will support my camera/lens just fine.
