Been trying to set focusing/metering to the star button...got it done, but the shutter button still performs these functions too. Any advice on how to remove these functions from the shutter button?

C.Fn IV-1 - 2 or 3 depending on whether you want AE lock or metering on the shutter button.

On the 40D I use the AF ON button rather than the star button to focus/meter and the shutter for AE lock - I think the 5DII is the same?

Anyway, I think the CF setting on both cameras is the same: CF IV-1 and option 3 (AE lock/metering + AF start.

Hope that helps :)

Are you using the 40D? If so there's a C.Fn to swap the functions of the AF-On and * buttons so when using the grip the * is the focus button.

Edit: it seems you already knew this. I don't think I read your comment right the first time.

Thanks...it was Option 3. Canon changed the wording from the options on the original 5D,which caught me off guard. Thanks again for the assist.

Probably because they made the bad decision to let the slightly improved BG-E2N replace the BG-E2, instead of letting them live in parallel. Now the BG-E2N has to serve cameras like the 30D as well, and that camera doesn't have any AF-ON button.
The new WFT-E3 grip, which works on 40D and newer models only, does indeed have the AF-ON button.

So, instead of adding a 50-cent button that just won't do anything on 20D/30D, they leave it off and to get it you have to buy a $800 grip with wireless which you probably don't need. Makes no sense.
