UPDATE:

Got the camera back today and it is working like new. Canon did the following:

-Replaced the part that fell out
-Replaced the lens pin contacts
-Replaced the plactic piece around the lens pin contacts
-Replaced the focusing screen
-Cleaned the sensor
-Updated the firmware

I was a bit frustrated that i had to argue with them a bit to get it fixed, but they have changed their records to make me the original owner since i am the one who registered the camera so i dont have any future problems. They also gave me a $100 voucher good towards any repair after the warranty runs out. All in all, I am happy with the outcome and am glad they did, in my opinion, the right thing.

---------------

please note, at this point, this thread is more of a rant. original thread HERE. Okay, now lets proceed.
I sent my camera in to Canon. today i got an email back from them. it read something like this:

Dear JUSTIN :

We have received your equipment for evaluation and repair. We have estimated your repair as detailed below. Upon your approval and payment remittance we will start the necessary repairs.

Repair Cost:
$ 216.50

Status:
Estimated
June 05, 2009

WHAT!?!?!? I called them to find out what was going on and why there was any cost whatsoever. Unfortunately i got a generic guy since the repair department is closed uintil monday. He told me that the notes on the repair order were as follows:
-Possibly damaged due to moisture
-Possibly damaged due to high impact
-Not original purchaser and warranty is non-transferable

Okay, i can almost put up with the last one, but i still bought it from a local guy who got an extra one, and it was brand new in the box. i have the reciept and i was the one who filled out the warranty card and submitted that information (this is therefore not a transfer of the warranty). so this would leave me to believe if you bought someone a camera as a gift, then they wouldnt be able to get warranty work on it since they didnt initially buy the camera? as far as moisture damage, come on. seriously. and even the high impact damage. youre telling me 2 screws backed themselves out from a high impact, yet nothing else on the camera is broken, loose or even scratched. not to mention im told that there are others having this same problem over on the FM forums.

So come monday, i will update this post to see what Canon plans on doing about this.

I am just beyond pissed right now. okay, rant off.... for now.

Just remember that when you do talk with someone that has the authority to make something happen, ranting will not get your camera fixed. As for "others having this same problem over on the FM forums," have you gone there and read any posts? You might want to have facts in hand and take a very deep breath before calling Canon on Monday.

thats the plan. i am going to politely describe what happened, and ask why there would be a charge since i am the actual "end-user" as described in canons warranty policy. I figure id get my ranting out here and gather any ideas anyone else has about the situation.

unfortunately i am not having luck finding the posts, i was just told by a user on another forum that he saw a few. Im trying to get with him to track those down and verify them. if anyone else has seen these issues, please let me know.

UPDATE:

I talked with Canon and after going through 2 people was able to get a supervisor on the phone. The whole problem was pretty much the fact that since the camera was bought the camera on someone elses credit card, they assumed it was his even though i was the one who registered it and filled out the warranty information card. They claimed that blunt trauma could have been a factor since they assumed i bought it from the initial owner in used condition, and couldnt be sure what happened to it in his possession. After actully listening to me and understanding the situation, the supervisor said they are going to fix it under warranty. We'll see how they do.

Sometimes you run into service department staff that seem to suffer from blunt trauma.

Bad luck, I had a similar mishap a week or so ago, and to avoid the hassle of loosing a camera body for two months trying to figure out who exactly I ordered it from over the internet, went to Calumet, only to be richly rewarded with a 'it will cost £400 to repair'

Such is life, I need it back like in the three weeks they said will be the turn around

I wish I was patient and ordered my stuff through high street dealers

or some that need to suffer from blunt trauma...

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

I think that is a bunch of bull. It shouldn't matter who paid for it as long as you are the one that registered it and its still under the warranty period. I just took my camera in today to get the sensor and focus screen cleaned. My sister paid for the camera with here credit card and they didn't even care who paid for it, only that I had the receipt and filled out the warranty card even though another persons name was on the receipt. They also are doing it for free even if they have to replace the focus screen and I'm getting it back in two days.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

I guess maybe Canon has never heard of the quaint procedures involved with Christmas, birthdays, and "I bought this because I like you" presents

its actually a local photographer who pre-ordered the camera from 3 places and was going to cancel 2 when the first one shipped. well 2 shipped on the same day, so rather than pay for return shipping he asked if i wanted to buy it from him so i wouldnt have to wait. i picked it up still in the shipping box and everything. that take away the fishy taste? :)

warranty is for one year right? I got quoted over the phone for a new focus screen for my camera which is out of warranty. They told me it was a flat rate charge of around 200.00, plus the cost of next day shipping...

200.00 for a focus screen? baaahahaha canon.

I fixed it myself.

So should people register their camera only when something breaks? because then the warranty will start then, correct or incorrect?

Incorrect, it starts when you purchase it. Whatever the date is on the invoice is the date it starts.
