5D MarkII on its way. I have been reading some posts from new MarkII owners and seems to be some concerns with DOF being so much less???

I looked at a lot of images shot with the MarkII and DOF looks pretty dawn good.

Will shooting with MarkII be a whole new style vs 40D???

Do you need to stop down a few stops vs 40D to get same DOF?

For one thing, all your lens will perform as if they lost some reach.

As far as DOF, for the same FOV, whcih would mean different focal lengths on the 2 bodies to achieve that, yes, you'll lose the equivalent of about 1 and 1/3 stops.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

Don't worry. You did the right thing buying the Mark II. Yeah it will be a whole new style! Great deep colors, low light photography with very little noise. I envy you. Experiment when you get the camera. You'll have the option of the nice thin DOF when you need it, and you can always stop down to increase it. Make sure to post some shots when you get it!

Using a full frame you still dont need to stop it down that far to have everything in full focus. You just need to learn to focus. Sounds harsh but isnt. Learn DOF calculaters or hyperfocal points for your gear. Too Easy. And as said above you can always close down but you cant reduce you DOF to the same point on the 40d. Just remember people got fantastic photos well before they had crop sensors.

by more, you mean less.

in general, for a given framing you will need to stop down about 1-2 stops more to maintain similar depth of field

Best thing I ever did was to get a 5dMII as an addition to my 40D. There is no comparison. As as a Landscape photographer (film panorama 6x17mm) I am very aware of the differences of digital to film in areas like dynamic range ,Color Depth and Saturation.Until the 5d Mkii I still believed film had the edge..especially in Large Format using velvia 100. Then when i first saw the pics off my 5d I could have sworn that it was off a film tranny not a digital sensor!.What I also noticed was that the 5D MarkII colors are very lush and "creamy"....more in keeping with film than digital. .This coupled with low noise at high iso sealed it for me. 40D now only used for my childrens sports and as a backup body on general commercial assignments

Also DOF change from 40D to 5dMkIIwas never an issue when I upgraded as a full frame sensor digital camera was only going back to what most of the canon ef and L lens's were designed for in the first place, that is, Film SLR Cameras (35mm )!!!!!!.

Wow thanks for eveyones replies.

I am a little nervous as had not found this as a issue until now. Guess in some ways it will be like going back to 35MM days.

I am sure I will figure it out quickly. More concerned about the difference due to going back and forth between the two bodies.

I know with my 40D many times I did not get the DOF effect I was trying for when stopping down. 'Guess with the 5DII that will be more noticable. Say when stopping down to f16 so get more DOF

no brainer.

unless you really dont need a 5dmk11. for the price od a 5dmk11,,,you can get a 40d, 70-200 f/2.8L, and, a 17-55,,and if you factor in the cs4 upgrade,,the you also get a 10-22. so unless you have to have 21mps and the best high iso out there........i would get the glass and a 40d

I was being somewhat sarcastic.

The center focus of 5d mk2 produces more sharp pictures in ai servo than my passed 40d.

OR think about it like this - with your 5d2 you wont be crippled with large DOF and too much in focus in the frame - thats more how i see it - f2.8 on 40d just doesnt cut it for me. I do admit that i primarily shoot under f5.6 for most things and stop down only to improve sharpness on 100-400 to f8 ish and jump to f8 if theres enough light to get multiple people in the frame.

but i just love thin dof... me and a 5d are like peas and carrots :)
