Hi

I am planning to buy the following lens combination for my EOS 50D .

Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 Image Stabilized USM SLR Lens for EOS Digital SLR's
Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens for Canon EOS SLR Cameras

Can you share your first lens combination and thoughts?

Get the 18-55 IS and the 55-250 IS lenses First. Very good quality, nice coverage and not very much money.

Brainage,

The first camera I bought I felt it was necessary to get a lens with a long range zoom. I shelled out the cash for a generic 70-300 and spent the next 4 years continuously cursing my decision. The AF was slow, the sharpness was poor etc etc. This may have improved, particularly with the IS lens, but I doubt it.

In your position I would take the time to research a good "standard" lens or the highest quality you can justify, and get good with that. Use that time to save some money and get a good high quality zoom 70-200 L (one of the 4 available, depending on what you decide you need).

If seems you have committed to this by stepping up and buying the 50D, I just think it would be a shame to reduce the quality of your images by using lower end glass.

You will get a range of different opinions on this, and there are lots of previous threads about the pros and cons of just about any combination imaginable.

Good Luck!

Kf

Missing from your question is any hint about what you want to accomplish with the camera.

When I first bought my 40D my goal was to learn photography as an art form and my choice of first lens was the 50mm 1.4. I stuck with that for about 6 months and was out shooting every weekend. My lens collection has grown a lot in the couple of years since but I'm still very happy with the prime.

If you have a chance to pick up a 50D combo with the 18-200 give it a consideration. This will get you by while you learn and figure out if you want to venture into multiple lenses which should involve some of Canons upper end. A super zoom is really nice when chasing kids and there is no lens swapping when 50mm becomes too short and you missed the shot. The 18-200 is awesome for a walkaround lens and holds its value well on Ebay, in case you decide to go for some L or F2.8 lenses.

Here is a thread on the Canon 18-200mm https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=704572

I got a 17-55 and a 70-300 to use with my 50D. The 17-55 is super fast and I think it is worth the extra. I would have liked a 100-400, but the 70-300 is a third of the price, so that will perform my telephoto duties for now.

Had my 50D and a 7-55mm f2.8 for about three weeks now and couldn't be happier. Excellent for shooting indoors in low light. Great wide angle capabilities and easy to use.

I agree with the last post ^^, I use the 17-55 and couldn't be happier, but before the 17-55 I used the 18-55 IS kit lens and got great results with it as well. I still use the 55-250 IS for kids sports and am happy with the results but am eventually going to upgrade to a 70-200.

I'd go with the 55-250/18-55 combo. Use the change for a flash (430ex or something). Save the remainder until you know what you want.

There's certainly nothing wrong with your two picks. The 17-85 is the lens that everyone loves to hate. I use one for my walkabout and I'm quite satisfied with it. The 70-300 IS is one of the better telezooms out there. If you want to save some money, then go with the 18-55 and the 55-250 combo that the other posters mentioned.

The trouble with those lenses combined with the 50D is that the higher resolution will bring out the deficiencies more than say a 450D. The LAST thing you want is to have bought a top notch body (okay it's not a 5DmkII but it's still pretty good) and have lenses dragging the performance down. You may as well have spent half the money and got a cheaper body. IMHO at least... Other's are welcome to disagree.
