I just purchased the Velbon FHD-51Q its seem to work great with 5DII + 70-200/2.8IS and only cost US$80 in Singapore. already had the 128 RC but it keeps unscrewing off base thread. was going to get 501 but no stock in Singapore.

Got a picture of this setup, I'd love to drool over it...

It's simple and it works like a charm. I'll be shooting my first publicity concept in the next 2 weeks...

Do you mind me asking what this setup cost? Love it. The picture is nice and the setup is amazing looking, you must do product photography or something your picture caught my eye! I might have to consider a setup like this.
Did that strap come with the tripod?

Would these pieces get me this exact setup or did you purchase something else? The Red Rock stuff confuses me, did you piece it together or did they have a bundle to sell?

1. 501 HDV head & 351 MVB Tripod (with spreader) (external link)
2. Red Rock follow focus (external link)

Chris:

I do not do any product photography...lol. I am a wedding and portrait photographer. The picture is simple, one flash (580EXII with PW) side and behind the tripod lighting the wall in my living room.

The 2 products you posted are exactly what I have.

I have the Manfrotto mvb351 tripod (+ spreader and bottom flat pegs) with a Manfrotto hdv 501 Head.

Then I have the , Red rock indie follow focus bundle. (it comes with the 3 gears for your various lenses)

You can see small example on my website of videos I have done. I have a bigger project coming soon :P

The B&H link says tripod feet not included, did you purchase those as well?
Or do the bottom flat pegs come with it and tripod feet are something else?

If you got the Red Rock Indie Follow Focus its a different link than what I have up there?

Looks a bit different and has less, what gear sizes did you get?
I just don't know a lot about the Red Rock stuff, your picture looks a lot different than what the link here shows.

PS. Your videos are awesome; even the simple ones very good! How do you like smug mug hosting, seems to load the fastest out of any other HD hosting I've watched.

that redrock follow focus is the first version they made, not that the new one is any better. that's a pretty good follow focus but old design, same as the new ones.

noticed how his FFocus is oriented in a way for right-hand focus-pulling. that's bc canon's focus ring can be very close to the body. this is the reason why I say old design, old gearbox.

not really my first pick for follow-focus. check Cavision follow focus. their design eliminates the problem.

check www.freshdv.com (external link). there's a vid of the comparison, not sure if cavision is on there.

for the rod-support system, the best one for the money is cavision, bar-none. many ppl believe it's a suckie product but have no idea why it's sucks.

to me their design is very simple and very effective, much better than all of the other ones. the only reason why other brands are highly prized is bc of great marketing.

I did purchase the feet separately....

It came with three gears.
The rod support is another add on. I have purchased it from indifocus.com

I love my hosting with smugmug. I have been with them for about 2 years now...

Thanks sebmour, so if I decided to go with indifocus.com instead of red rock micro, can you provide me links to what I would need to buy to get that same setup you have or close to it?

Why did you go with part Red Rock and part Indifocus? Just curious.

Also do you have a link to the feed you purchased?

Red rock FF is much better then the Indifocus...

I went with the indifocus rods since they are cheaper and rods are rods.

Rods:
http://www.indifocus.com/products_indirailspro.htm (external link)

FF:
Red rock Follow focus indie bundle

Head and tripod are from Manfrotto...

Thanks sebmour again! I understand now, so there are just two basic pieces of equipment for your setup. The Red Rock Follow Focus (external link) and the IndiFocus Rods (external link).

Just a few more questions I swear...
There are like 8 different packages of rails on that page, can you tell me which ones you went with?
Did you need 3 different sizes of the microLens Gears or did you order all the same size? What lenses do you use anyway?
What makes the tripod legs you got better for video than say some Gitzo still photography legs, for video shooting?

So to price out the entire setup...

1. Manfrotto 501HDV Video Head+351MVB2 Trpd.+350SPRB Spreader + Bag (external link) - $400
2. Tripod Feet for 351MVB2K (external link) - $20
3. Red Rock Follow Focus (external link) - $675
4. IndiFocus Rods (external link) - $99 - $269

So about $1200 - $1500 total? Not bad.

A photography tripod is to small and light for video. Video needs to be very still since shake will be seen and felt. Also, the easy leveling head is a must for video!

I went with the 18inch rods kit.

It came with 3 different gears. I mostly use the 2 biggest ones. (size B and C)
I use a 17-40L, 24-70L, 70-200L, 15m fisheye, 300 2.8L IS, 85 1.8 and 14 2.8L II.

You have the prices correct! I do not find it bad since I get paid to do photography and video is my hobby for now.

Cool. Thanks for the info. And so even though a nice set of Gitzo legs like the Series 3, 3541LS lets, they would not be good for video? I mean they are meant to use for stills to keep very steady, why wouldn't video work as well?
And I dont think you told me, but did that Manfrotto strap come with the tripod? Or is it part of the case for the tripod?
