I am in the Market for a flash to go with my 450D and was wondering whether to go with the 550EX or wait till I have a little more money and get the 430EX II.

What do people reckon?

I am a complete flashgun novice and not sure what to do LOL

Unless I found a really good deal on a 550EX, I'd save up for the 430EX-II. Around these parts a used 550EX seems to go for about 75% of the cost of a new 430EX-II, and about the same price as a used earlier version 430EX.

Also right now Canon has a rebate on the 430EX-II that narrow the price gap even further.

I own a 430EX and a 550EX. The 430 is the go to unless I need the 550s master capability for running the 430 wireless.

The 430 is smaller, easier on batteries, and knows if its on a crop or FF body.

Since you say you are a novice with flash guns, the ability to set up the 430 EX II from the camera's menu system may be of some value to you.
You can't do that with the older 550 EX.
