I recently purchased the EF14mm f/2.8 L II USM lens and absolutely love it! But that's not what this thread is about!

What I'm looking for is a gelatin rear mount ND filter for it and can't seem to find any direct products out there for this lens?

What is the approach here? Do I just buy a large ND sheet and cut it to size? If so, who makes the best sheets of this stuff and how does one make an intelligent decision about who's sheets are better or worse?

I've seen these sheets that seem to be aimed at users who want to put them in front of their lighting devices but nothing marketed specifically for mounting on lenses. I knew that the mount system on the back of my lens appears to be looking for something that is quite thin but the manual doesn't state what the thickness should be and doesn't make any recommendations as to which gelatin filter product to buy...Canon doesn't appear to offer this product?

Have any of you searched out, found, cut, mounted and successfully done what I am attempting to do? If so, please chime in with product suggestions and where to find them. I'm basically looking for ND filter strengths of 3 and 6 stops.

Cheers!

I'm curious also but for the 17-40. Most likely it's the same thing.

Just buy 3"x3" gel and cut to fit -- Kodak Wratten's come to mind.

BTW -- the 17-40 does not have a rear gel holder bohdank... I would just use a normal filter.

Why not get a high quality ND filter for the front of your expensive lens instead of slapping a cheapo-IQ-stealing piece of gelatin on the back?

I only use gels for flashes.

Because the 14mm doesn't accept them nureality... be about the same as trying to slap one on in front of your fisheye.

Don't know what you mean by "doesn't" accept them. I haven't tried my CPL on my 17-40, which I just got. So, your post prompted my curiosity and I tried it. Doesn't seem to have any issues. Using DPP's lens correction, which also corrects vigneting for a specific lens, without a filter, the edges with the CPL on are fine.

Many people use filters on Nikon 14-24, so it's just about imagination etc. ;)

Hmm, mine has one. I've always been curious about using it to, this may warrant a trip to the local photo store tommorow.

The lens in question in this thread is the 14L from Canon. This lens has a permanently attached hood so that Cokin monstrosity wouldn't work on it.

Cheers!

OK, so one vote for the Kodak 3 x 3 gels. Thank you!

And, I do own a 17-40L as well and there is in fact a rear gel mount, very similar to the back of the 14L. So, the info can be applied to both lenses with regard to gelatin filter usage. The only caveat being that the 17-40 can accept normal front mounted glass filters which would be of superior quality and durability to a floppy gel filter which can cause ghosting effects should it deform in shape with age and temperature conditions.

Cheers!

I've wondered about a filter for this lens as well. Do they make a IR gelatin type filter?

That's on a DX format camera though, so such a setup would likely vignette heavily on FF.

If you can find a booklet of those free Lee gelatin samples, I'm pretty sure there will be at least a couple strengths of ND included that you can cut to the right size.
