Beat the s--t out of it having a good time, and don't worry about resale. Otherwise you'll cringe with every little scratch.

Actually, I'm sure I don't have to say that to you, but everyone else is being so serious. Also, I had to verbalize it (as it were) so that I would believe it more, too.

Ah, good find! Would've been a lot more expensive for someone who doesn't have the the accessories; no problem for you thought! :)

I really felt like I got burned when I sold my MK III. Cost me $4.5K new and 1 year later I was lucky to get $3K for it. Right now I have no FF body. Tempted to get a 1D MK IIs as they seem to have depreciated enough to be a good value now. Seems like the 5D is still popular and holding its value well. Any guesses on the future (say 1-2 years out) value of a 5D MK II?

Electronics are not good money investments for resale value....;)
The manufactures are fast at work to make new products to sell more, to make more money. Unfortunately your not penciled into the profit program...

In the first two sentences you complain about the depreciation and in the fourth sentence you praise depreciation. And in the last you want people to look into their crystal balls and predict the going rate of a camera up to 2 years away. One should never purchase electronic equipment for the resale value aspect. The questions are: What do you need, what do you want, what can you afford? Base your purchase off of those factors not ones you can’t control such as resale value in 2 years. If I did that I would never buy anything whatsoever.

wait, you think 5Ds are holding their value? They were originally MORE than the 5Dii is now ($3000, or was it even more than that?) and are now selling for around ~$1500? That's a pretty big hit IMHO.

If you don't want to get "burned", don't buy new/early and sell late. The key is timing your purchase so you don't pay full MSRP (rebates, used, sales, whatever) and then sell it BEFORE the new model comes out. This way you buy in below the original sticker and sell before the price DIVES....

also, the 1Diii is a bad example because of the AF issue.

but, for example, my last 2 bodies? My 1Dii I owned for 18 months and sold for $400 less than I bought it. I bought it on the rebate and sold before the 1Diii came out. My 5D was picked up "slightly used" and sold for $400 less than I bought it for, also 18 months later. Now I sold it BEFORE everyone else dumped their 5Ds for the new version, and I also picked up my 5Dii for 3% off, tax free and no shipping (I'm an affiliate, I used my own links ;)). I was thinking I'd keep the 5D as my body a lot longer (it wasn't a needed upgrade) but the bells and whistles of the 5Dii caught my attention, as did flipping my 5D for my <$500 loss number.

And one last point. Regardless of how much you "lost" on a body, calculate how much each shot cost. If you're <$.25 per shot, you've saved a ton of money over shooting film. So don't look at is as a loss on the body, but a savings per frame. Electronics depreciate, so you just have to time things right. It's funny, but I'm thinking about getting another 1Dii again. I sold my last one for $2800 and could now get another for less than half that (and possibly even a 1Dii'N'). So, to me, it's about timing.

But I do expect to keep my 5Dii for a LONG time (basically, the mark III probably won't tempt me, a 1Div could if it's a merge of the 2 lines).

Its always a difficult "call". The value of the 5D MK1 has actual risen relative to the price it was when the 5D2 was announced. People expected the 5D2 to be cheaper at launch and then found they couldn't make the price. The compromise was the MKI and that pushed prices back up. Add to that the general price rises by Canon earlier this year and now you can see why the MKI is now achieving higher prices. Waiting for MKII's to reach your desirable price may just leave you out in the cold for a long time. Do you really want to own this model????

I'm pleased that I didn't hold off on some additional lens and body purchases last December. Everything I purchased has risen in second-hand value: especially the good lenses.
