Well I now have a four month old niece and I had hoped she would grow out of the habbit of starring blankly into the lens, but it doesn't seem to be stopping. She looks like a deer caught in headlights. It isn't the shutter click, it isn't Canon, she does the same thing with my sister's P&S, although come to think of it -- that's a Canon too. Anyway ... here are at 1, 2, 3, and 4 months.

Out of 350 shutter clicks, I may have about 20 that she doesn't have this same expression. I basically have to hide the camera do it between her looking for the camera. She's very quick to freeze and look very quickly at the shutter click and it takes 10-15 seconds before she gives up and goes back to what she was doing.

Any ideas on what I can do?

Have someone call her or shake a rattle in a different direction. (I have a 4-month-old, too.:))

I think I missed the main point, we've tried everything, it's only momentary distraction (maybe 1 frame). She just stares right into the lens. She's usually very talkative and lots of movement, she just freezes up when there is a camera around. Last night they were feeding her and she is yelling and screaming and gesticulating wildly, as soon as I got the camera out ... you see the results of about 50 frames in #4.

I am sure there are millions of parents who would be very grateful for such an easy means of keeping a 'yelling and screaming' child quiet! :D

my daughter would do the same thing...but honestly, i think its because when you pull the camera up they want to stare at it. Its something interesting to them. It may just take her a while to get out of that stage. A lot of babies typically do this. I love the first shot although it is a bit underexposed, and the 3rd shot was a cute idea, but the focus is on the basket and not the baby.

I haven't really got any suggestions (I agree with christyjo) but I do find the watermarks distracting - they obscure much of the image. Was it really necessary to use watermarks on this thread?

Have you tried setting the camera on a tripod and use a remote. By the way she is a doll!!

Sorry about the watermark, it's auto applied from LR when I export and I forgot to change my settings when I exported. I don't even notice it anymore.

I feel a little bit better now that I know other kids do it, I just have never heard any other parent speak of it. She is the first of the next generation, so we're all muddling through. Thank you for the feedback.

Speaking of generations, I just took a 4 generation photo, and we just missed a 5 generation by about a year or as my great-grandma passed away. Now, that would have been a photo to talk about for ages.

Dave -- we (her dad and I) only pressed to find out if it soft or not, we stopped doing that after we got yelled at by my sister. :-) We're no longer allowed to be alone with the baby.
