On which camera?

Would you need the 135-200 range?
Would you miss the 18-28 range?

Tough to say. Take a look at the two threads below for examples.

Canon 18-200

Canon 28-135

Also check out this link to compare the focal lenghts of the two lenses. See what your missing wider than 28 or longer than 135. Make sure the little "Digital" camera is yellow to simulate the crop sensor on the 50D

Focal Length Simulator (external link)

Beyond that I have never shot with a 18-200 but have with the 28-135. Loved the 28-135 and got some great shots with it. However, somtimes 28 wasnt wide enough and 135 wasnt long enough.

Do a search on both lenses and Im sure youll find alot.

It really depends on what your plans are for your Camera. Do you plan on just having one lens?

The Canon 18-200 is an excellent lens (but not as good as the Nikon version), and it's very useful as a one lens solution. I sold it on eBay and have since upgraded.

But to answer your question, if I could only have one lens, it would be the 18-200 because going from wide to telephoto is very valuable.

Budget allows only one lens for the next 9 months. So which one will be better with the 50 D body.

Does no one like to research thier own purchases and make thier own decisions?

For 1 all purpose lens the 18-200 would be your choice. Not sure how the optics are but it will cover most of the range you need.

Which lens will you buy , if its going to be your only lens?

Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

If it's going to be your ONLY lens, forever, then the 18-200. That'll give you the most flexibility to shoot what you need. I'm just not a huge fans of the ultra-super zooms. There are lots of compromises to IQ that go into making a lens with that much range.

For a starting lens to serve as a walkaround and to build your kit around, the 28-135. It's a good value consumer lens, great focal length and produces excellent images. Mine rarely comes off my 400D, and when it does, it's for the EF-S 10-22, which pairs very well with it.

But I really think you ought to reconsider buying that 50D. If your only goal is to render your DSLR a high-end point-and-shoot with one lens and one lens only, many of the features and advantages you'll be paying extra to get with the 50D will be wasted. Much better for you to go with an XSi or T1i or any other body in the Rebel line. Simply paying more won't ensure greater quality of photos.

The 18-200 is the newer of the two lenses, and has a newer generation IS system. If you plan on shooting in lower light, you may want to get the 18-200 for its slightly more evolved IS.

18-200 no contest, 28mm isn't very wide. You will find yourself up against the 28mm end all the time with the 28-135mm.

Thanks for all your feedback. I did do my research the past month and trying to settle down with a 50D and 18-200 lens to start with. But i wanted a Pro's blessing before i bite the bullet.

the budget for these two lenses is entirely different..the 18-200mm is about 600 new...and the 28-135mmIS is about 250 used since they are everywhere now...

i know you said budget only allows for one lens...but you could easily turn that 600 dollar budget into three good lenses...my recommendation is

18-55mmIS..55-250mmIS, and a 50mm 1.8

covers you in many instances and allows you to get many shots...

+1 with the 18-55 IS, 55-250 IS, and a 50mm f1.8, but the 18-200 IS would make a nice general purpose walk around lens.

Canon 50 D + 18-200 comes for a great deal - 1350 USD with 300 USD canon rebate.

If i get the Canon 50D + 18-55mmIS..55-250mmIS, and a 50mm 1.8

It goes up to 1900 USD

Where are the offering the 50D with 18-200IS for $1350? Most places I see it as $1599 or so including the rebate.
