get the 18-200 if budget is an issue. It will serve as a good walk around. But with 50D.. I would go for better lenses if possible.. Get a fast prime for lowlight.

Canon 50 D + 18-200 comes for a great deal - 1350 USD with 300 USD canon rebate.

Watch out, this sounds real fishy. According to the Canon rebate ad itself, the normal price is $1899-300= $1,599 sale price. That's the price reputable retailers like Amazon, Adorama, and B&H have it at. $1350 sounds almost too good to be true, where are you buying it from?

Unless maybe you're subtracting $300 from the ~$1599 price. That price already has the rebate applied.

Where are the offering the 50D with 18-200IS for $1350? Most places I see it as $1599 or so including the rebate.

look at Amazon.com

Amazon charges $1599 if you buy the kit. But if you buy the body and lens separately the price goes down to $1350 once the rebate is applied. I larned this the hard way after buying the kit.

So given the fact that we can get this for the Price , is it worth to get the 50D + 18-200 for 1350 USD or go with some other combination?

yeah i think getting the 18-200mm for about $150 would be well worth it...however i'm still doubting that's possible...

Holy cow, it's true! You have to go all the way to checkout, it doesn't show up in the cart.

In that case, go for it, it's a great deal.

I just tried this and it didn't apply a promotional discount. I selected a 50D body only and the 18-200 lens and the total came to 1762.00

Both the body and lens need to be sold by Amazon (don't select the one by Adorama or whatever). Then go all the way through checkout to where you enter in your payment information, and it'll show the discount.

Thanks for the news folks. I have been looking and the 50D, and trying to find out about this lens. The $1599 price was about right. Then I saw this thread, and the price for camera and lens seemed right. I could only seem to get the two for $1444. Still, this is a bargain, so I finally pulled the trigger. Now, I can't wait. Many Thanks.

50D and the 18-200 for the 1300-1400 range is a good deal!

Hello! Wanted to bump this thread because I'm mulling over the same question of whether to go with a new EF-S 18-200 f/3.5-5.6 IS ($400) or a used EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM ($250-300).

Will 28mm be wide enough on an APS-C sensor?
Is the image quality compromised with the long focal length in the 18-200?
Will I miss the extra length on either end if I go with the 28-135?
Will the USM on the 28-135 be advantageous?
Is the 200mm really 200mm?

Etc etc.

I'd love to hear from anybody else has "been there, done that". FWIW, I see the 28-135mm IS USM lenses used for around $250-$300. But I can get the 18-200mm brand new in a 60D kit for just $1400.

Photography is not my profession, and I can't / don't want to afford many lenses. I'm looking for something versatile, but with a better than bottom-of-the-barrel image quality. I record classical music and I would like to take pictures during sessions and concerts, mostly indoors. I won't necessarily be able to position myself to get the ideal distance or angle. I'm sure my needs will become much more clear as I begin using the camera, but I'd like to get started off on the right foot if possible.

Thanks!
