Total Pun-demonium!!
Wow, this is the best thread I have ever started :)

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

So is there a correlation between being very well known on internet photography forums and having a very high understanding of the principles of photography and digital camera theory, but never actually taking any pictures? ;)

Doesn't bother me at all. Not one bit.

You wanna use direct flash against a fish tank glass with your fancy gear that you don't know how to use? Be my guest. You probably can afford to do so, and hey, good for you.

You wanna drive a $200,000 European manual shifting car even though you don't know how to drive manual and burn it out? Go for it. I wish I was in your shoes and had that kind of money to burn!

I don't go around playing Mr. Good Samaritan showing people how to use their cameras b/c I figure that must make some people feel I am being a tad condescending. I get the fair share of overzealous photographers just itching to give me "pointers"...cuz you know, with my gear, I must look like I have no idea what I am doing and there must be that ONE way to take THAT photo. It's annoying, but I laugh it off.

You really want to know why people spend thousands of dollars in camera gear and not skim through the manual?

Because they can...

I wholeheartedly agreed. I was at the zoo the other day and a gentleman asked me what lens I was using and I told him (70-200mm 2.8 IS). He then showed me his camera and his lens (forgot what it was) and I noticed there wasn't a CPL on there as we were trying to shoot through glass. So I told him that he should get a CPL because it helps with reflections. He was cool at first but was offended as he was walking away saying something like "I know what a CPL does" (he happened to have left it at home).

I actually about to stop myself before telling him about the CPL but it kind of slipped out. So from now on I'm not going to say a word to anyone unless they ask me something.

Then you have the guy with a $400 camera who is CONVINCED he's the next master and will tell you, heck even fight with you that he knows what is best.

I've seen them in the lens and body forum...

Oh yeah, we ALL know how much of a Pro camera the S5IS is...

It is far better to remain silent and thought a fool than to speak up and remove all doubt.

Remember, it's them who might think it. Knowing when to shut up is a fine art. Too bad I can't do it more myself.

Speaking for myself, I have certainly not aimed this thread 'anti a lot of people direction'. I started merely by pointing out (I hoped in an innocuous manner) something that annoyed me in he same way as people now knowing how to use the cameras annoyed the OP. You could argue that this thread started out 'anti a lot of people'. Another thing that annoys me is people being unpleasant for no particular reason.
By the way, there is no apostrophe in 'get's';)

Hoorah for this thread not being locked while I've been busy.

@ tkbslc, shame on you for losing enthusiasm....it's a fun thread with people from around the globe joining together to throw various things at each other - some of it's even quite constructive.....

....talking of which, @ Roger, how's the house project coming along? Well I hope.

And finally, @ lovely Roy, thinking you're being innocuous and actually being innocuous can be worlds apart. This is an international forum wherein some members may not have had access to an education like us Brits...so my previous comments were, if you like, an attempt to say, "Why not relax a little about a few errors, ok?"
Oh, and there's usually a "t" at the beginning of "the". Or maybe, like the rest of us, you're capable of making errors while typing and thinking at the same time.
;););)

Yeah, you can always spot a loser because their cameras don't cost enough. They're as bad as the losers that buy more camera than their skill justifies.

When will people realize that talent isn't enough? You also need to prove it to other photographers by spending a lot.

Good point. Kind of a no-win situation, isn't it? You've either got too much or not enough.
