thinking you're being innocuous and actually being innocuous can be worlds apart.

Or it could be in the eye of the beholder. There are people who will always look for, and find, offence when absolutely none is meant. All i would ask skygod - respectfully, politely and innocuously - is that you lay off me.

I'm afraid that doesn't work - it's pronounced Harts!:D

Roy, I think Roger may have been imitating an upper-class accent when delivering the word "Herts":)

If so, my compliments to him :D (Perhaps he will verify that).

Yeah, Skygod, lay off Roy! Picking on Roy is MY job!!!

And the house project is coming along nicely. It's livable, now, but I've used up this year's budget. This year, we made it clean and tight, and almost bug free. Next year, we start making it pretty.

And yes, Roy, we of the (former) patrician class often use what you plebians would call an upper-class accent.

But in the case of "Herts," I was just off in my pun. Sorry.

I've often speculated...

Think of a sporting event, any event. Thousands of pop-up flashes being uselessly used from the stands.

Now imaging that (statistically possible, but waaaaay out there on the bell curve) all those pop-up flashes go off at precisely the same instant. What a wall of light coming at the poor players!

Oh, and there's usually a "t" at the beginning of "the". Or maybe, like the rest of us, you're capable of making errors while typing and thinking at the same time.
;););)

It's agreeably difficult to make sure you type everything just right when you're thinking. That's what proof reading is for. Before clicking the "submit" button, just read over what you've written, and correct any errors. I always assumed this was what others do, but after seeing so many misspellings it's hard to believe that folks habitually proofread and correct.

All that being said, I've been guilty of it myself on occasion - things do sometimes slipp thruu:D

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

Very true! All that money for a computer and the damned thing still can spell!

I always spot a typo before the post has even posted, but immediately after I click "submit."

How about using a pop-up flash to illuminate Saturn? Go see "Mom and Dad Save the World."

My old Metz 60CT1 could light up Uranus..Then again,, it could light up anyone's a##s..

That is actually a pretty funny thought. What are most pop ups, GN10 or so? Isn't flash power additive, so 10 GN10 would be GN100? If that is true 40,000 fans at the stadium all firing off flash at the same instant would be like GN 400,000!! Maybe we can light up the whole city :)

For instance, when I read some of the atrocious English on this forum, it annoys me no end - but, to the perpetrators, it's not important. It's all the same thing.

Roy,, we have to be a bit careful.. There are many members who aren't native English speakers,,they are forgiven.. But the ones who are native English speakers can't..

I've seen better grammar and sentence structure from some of my Elementary ESL students than what I've read by some native speakers.. I've read posts that read like a text messages.. The question is,,have these people fallen through the education net or are they just lazy??

Jurgen - obviously my comments weren't aimed at those who don't have English as their first language. In fact, one of the ironies is that most people from non-English-speaking countries finish up speaking better English than native speakers. I suspect it's because they learn the grammar to start with. :)

Funny you should say that Roy,,whilst in school I was never taught grammar formally.. I was expected to know and use it properly.. I had that very discussion with one of my classes the other afternoon.. Before I did my Diploma of TESOL I didn't even know there are 12 tenses.. Luckily for me my school's syllabus is beautifully written and the texts are brilliant.. Come to think of it,,I enjoy teaching grammar..
