Spot on. I use a 1D Mark IV and when I shoot my black labrador because of the lack of contrast I don’t get many keepers, no where near as many as when I shoot other coloured dogs.

I do a lot of dog photography - forget the 5D3 for this purpose. Its focusing system simply cannot deal with fast moving objects with minimal contrast. I use the 7D2 for this mostly and though it has the same focusing system as the 1Dx it still fails often. Also I use single AF point extended with 4 other points to help with focusing.

5DIII can still do the job, I shoot agility trials and have used 5DIII but have to admit 7DII gives me more keepers, I generally shoot with the case setting on the camera set to 2 or 5 and center point expanded, higher shutter speeds, rarely miss with 7DII set up at all
