Quick question - does anyone remember what the price of Canon's 24-70 was before the price increase? At the moment its listed at $1,190.00 at B&H (AFTER $80 instant rebate). Thanks in advance.

What price increase ? The price for most Canon zooms remains approximately the same.

I bought mine from B&H before the rebates and price increase for $1190. They had been at that price for quite some time.

when i bought mine (i think fall 2007) i paid $985 from B&H which included a special show discount, i think at the time the going price was $1050-$1075 (which also included a canon instant rebate).

if you adjust for inflation the price increase is not that bad....

I've purchased this lens twice, and sold it twice. :D

The first one was bought from One Call in October 2005 for $1149 (this was during a mail in, triple rebate promo where I got $135 back). I then bought one from Beach Camera in August 2008 for $1169.

Before January of this year it ranged from $1050-1130 on Amazon. Then it went up to about $1200. With the rebate it was $1190-80 so about $1110 at many stores. Then just about 3 weeks ago it went up across the board to about $1200 after the rebate. Some stores are selling it for something like $1270 including the rebate.

No, mostly due to my indecision.

I had my first one for quite a while (2 years maybe?), but after a while I started shooting with primes. I then bought a 24-105 and liked it so much that I decided to sell the 24-70, use the 24-105 as an all around lens, and use the primes for low light stuff.

This worked out fine for about a year, but I started thinking that I missed my 24-70, so I bought another one. After about 3 weeks I remembered why I sold my first one, so I sold my second one.

What really happened in that time frame was my shooting style changed. I began using the primes more and more, and now I use primes probably 99% of the time. I can't really remember the last time I used my 24-105 for anything--could be a year ago. But I like the 24-105 more as a mid-range zoom because it's smaller and lighter, and for what I want a mid-range zoom for, it's perfect.

Considering the amount a lot of imported stuff has changed in pricing lately, I doubt the prices will go down, even if the economy starts recovering because it'll take a long time for manufacturers to recover their losses.

What I've noticed in some areas is that some products are simply no longer available, they may be in the country where they are made but the manufacturers I have known personally in the past have told me that when a products sales drop past a certain percentage, they simply stop making them, it costs too much to devote employee time and factory space to anything that isn't supporting it'self.

One thing someone has brought up is that Nikon has come out with new models of the 24-70 and 70-200 2.8 lenses and are now charging and getting more money for them than Canon is getting for theirs. That shows something to Canon; the Nikon lenses are reportedly really good and Nikon is able to go for a higher price point.

So it would make manufacturing sense to come out with updated versions of both, especially the 24-70. These lenses must be in the bags of most professionals so there would be a huge ready built market. That and as gear gets old, it makes sense to upgrade and sell the old ones before they start costing in repairs.

That and the report that Canon and Nikon have in interviews claimed that they are going to be focusing more on the professional market with the economy shift as the amateur market is so awash with so many different products, the profits will simply be higher where they can make more profit per item. Makes sense to me and probably really cuts manufacturing cost per unit way down.

I've asked myself if Canon did make a new 24-70 and it tested out better, would I switch considering maybe that it'd be probably around $1400- $1600. Well mine is sharp and it has beautiful color, but it'd be tempting considering it's such an important lens in the lineup. But also like the new 24L compared to the series one, well I just bought a series I and cannot find anything on that lens that I feel needs any improvement at all, none.
