Where have my pictures gone?

I didn't quite know where to post this, sorry if it's in the wrong place...

I have a Canon EOS 450D/Xsi and I just uploaded some photos into my computer. They weren't in their normal spot when I went to look for them and I did a search on my computer for the folder name and nothing came up. I really don't want to lose my pictures. I deleted them off my card already, too, because I know they uploaded, I just don't know where.

Help is appreciated greatly.

What are you using to transfer the pics? If it's the EOS utility look in the preferences and note the download directory name.

I do use the EOS utility, and I looked in the download directory spot, but they aren't there. I saw them on the screen, and when they were done uploading I unplugged my camera and deleted them off of there.... I hope something didn't mess up too bad.

If you still can't find them you can use the Windows File Search utility to look for any file with the jpg or RAW extension.

don't know about your situation but I have the canon utility set up to create a new folder with every download with the shooting date.

Russ, so do I, but the folder isn't there today for some reason.

Randy, I tried that (looking for anything with a .jpg that I messed with today) and nothing came up.

I'd try another search and leave off the date part of the search. You may get more results than you want, but afterwards you can sort by date to see if you can find them.

If that doesn't get any results then they may very well be lost.

You could always use a file recovery program on your card if you haven't taken any more (or too many) shots on it.

Might try taking a pic, noting the file number, then searching for the full name - a few numbers from the test pic. For instance, if the pic you take has the number img_1234.jpg, search for img_1233.jpg.

No... I think they are gone. Searching doesn't work, the card recovery isn't working (I can't figure out how to make my camera appeare as a drive letter)... ugh. I really needed those photos. Thanks for the help, though, guys.

1. You can try to recover the deleted files from your card. There's a post about it somewhere. I use a free utility called Testdisk.
2. If you have another card, you can take some test shots and download them to see where they will down load to. If you won't change the setting they should download to the same location.

Might want to pick a card reader. They are cheap, less than $10. It will then mount as a drive and the software should work.

The camera presents itself as a camera, not a mass-storage device, on the USB bus.

Here's a rare review of read/write speeds of card readers. I was surprised to find that there's a USB model that's competitive with FireWire units.

Sometimes ( well more often than sometimes) computers have brain farts and stick things in the most unlikely place. Here's one that I have tried before and found stuff.

Take another couple of pics and upload into your computer following all of the steps that you did when you uploaded the misplaced files. Note carefully every step and the location of storage and they may have be stuck somewhere in the twilight zone that is your hard drive.

Just take another picture then upload it to your computer. Look at where it saves the pictures to and go there after. Your other pictures should be in the same folder as the new one. If they aren't there then they never really loaded the first time and their gone.
