Hi,
Just wondering if anyone uses the silent shooting mode on the 1D M3?

It seems useful for candid shooting and what not, but anybody use it regularly?

I used it once for a model/fashion shoot in a public library. It worked fine

I use it on my 1D II whenever I'm in one shot mode; it's the same effect. It's great. :)

The first time I used it, I had set it by accident,. and I was convinced my shutter had broken!

It was so quiet and disconcerting.. I was sure it was toast!
It works great.

Off the top of my head, I think it reduces your max possible FPS and shutter speed? but I may be wrong.. it might just reduce FPS..

On the 1D II it's only active in one shot mode so it doesn't affect FPS, and it only affects the mirror's return to the down position so it doesn't affect shutter speed... Did that change on the 1D III?

So I assume here you use the silent mode rather than regular one shot mode?

Do you find having to release the shutter to close down the mirror disconcerting? (I think that's the mechanics of it)

I have used it a lot, it is the difference of getting a closer shot of an animal or not, and weddings as well it is useful i guess

Can someone tell me how to get this to work on the 1D2? I did not realize there is a "quiet" type mode.
Thx.

Hook it up to a computer with a firewire cable and enable it with EOS utility, it's a personal function.

On 1D III it's a totally separate "shooting mode".. you get Single shot, L (low) burst and H (high) burst and "Silent".. so it;'s also much easier to get it turned on.

But you are right, when in silent there is no "burst" .. it's one shot,. but my theory is this,.

In 1 shot I can trigger the shutter approx 4-5 frames a second..
( So for burst I set the "L" low speed to 6 frames as that's the nest step. )

I'm theorizing that the mirror return may limit that ability to trigger 4-5 frames in a second to much lower...
But it's just a theory right now.

ok- thanks.

And like all personal functions, once you "enable it" from your PC,. you can then disable and re-enable it via the cameras menu..
Not the most intuitive thing, but handy to remember.
