Hey everyone;

I am going to buy a 1D MKIII today but the password is locked on it and it is set to only 1 mode.

How do I reset this password so that I can access all functions?

The original owner forgot what it was. He said he set it that way so his employee's couldnt accidently change settings in the field when taking school pictures.

I called Canon and he is the registered owner so its not hot.

The Tech rep wasnt sure how to reset it, he said he wasnt even sure removing the small bat would do it.

Does anyone out there know how to reset this?

Thanks everyone.

-Eric-

Removing the system battery may do it . There's nothing to lose by trying. If its successful, you can set everything up again.

let us know the outcome. It's useful knowledge.

Otherwise, don't buy it!

What password?

I just searched the PDF version of the owners manual and there is no mention of a password...

I didn't even know it had this function... ???
Will tethering it and going into the utilities on the PC get access?

I am not sure if it will or not.

There is a button on the back with a little key, you push that button and the password pops up.

It gives you an A-Z and 0-9 selection to type your password in.

I am getting the 1D plus 4 Alien Bee lights, two two large cases for everything, stands for the bee's, a HUGE Manfrotto aluminum tripod with a HUGE ballhead, umbrella's, teathers, triggers, cables and a AC bat power supply (No battery or charger though.)

Getting all that for $1500 :)

Its all clean like it is brand freakin new. He was a studio guy that is selling his stuff off.

I figured for $1500 it was worth it for all that.

I've never heard of any password?
You can block all unwanted modes by using C.Fn I-9, but then you just set that function back to make the accessible again.

Hope you've got a charger for this type of battery. Cost of a new one runs into a few hundred dollars. (nearly £400 in the UK for the charger and £130 for a Canon battery). Clone batteries work fine, but haven't seen a clone charger!

As for the password protected setting, I guess it can be changed when the camera is linked to the PC with EOS Utility.

Good luck

Take it into your local Canon service center and see if they know how to access or bypass the password. Make sure you have a receipt and some sort of proof of ownership. Good luck and good find.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick
