Had some more fun at the Old Ballyard the other day.

Here's Alexei Ramirez choppin' some wood. Used to be these shots were pretty cool, but anymore, with the maple bats, it seems I get one or more of these every game:

Focal Length 400 mm
Exposure Time 1/6400 sec
Aperture f/2.8
ISO Equivalent 800

Here are two parts of a 4-6-3 double play:

Jermain Dye puts the ball in play:

Focal Length 400 mm
Exposure Time 1/2500 sec
Aperture f/5
ISO Equivalent 640

Then 3 seconds later, thanks to the wonder of the focus preset button on my EF 400 f/2.8L IS lens, here's the DP turn at second base.

Yes, I shot this in Av (it was a partly cloudy day, with the sun darting in and out of the clouds) and I purposely stopped down to f/5 in anticipation of the play at second. I could have even stopped down a little further to get more of Ramirez within the DOF.

Speaking of the focus preset button, I am sometimes amazed how many people have this feature on their lens and don't use it. Often, in casual conversations (even with other pro's), they'll say something like "Oh, THAT's what that thing is for...why would you want to use that again?"

I am constantly coming up with new ways to take advantage of this little button.

Excellent stuff DW and I LOVE the focus lock button, I always set it for second base too. I don't use the auto focus stop buttons much though.

Very nice Dennis. I don't get too many broken bats in HS. Well none. I do love the extra buttons on the 300 and 400 Canon primes.

Just glad there's no cork coming out of those bats like you might see on the other side of town... :p

Hey, y'all, thanks for the comments. Chris, I don't know if it's Alexei or just the fragile maple bats. I got two other busted bat shots that game alone (neither had the ball in frame so they're not keepers).

Derek, don't be a Sammy hater ;)

Danny, I think some HS leagues are going to wood bats, or at least having wood bat tournaments.

Fade, I was in the first base photo well for these shots.

DW - I know it's not just Alexi, I get them too now. It's not as common to get all the pieces and the ball still in the frame though. Your first shot is fantsatic!

Do you use the focus stop buttons much?

CP,

I'm like you. I've never really figured out the value of the focus stop buttons. Max Simbron (pshizzy on FM) uses them all the time, and swears they're more useful than the AF preset, but I don't see it.
