man i am pissed.

i sent my 1ds mark III to canon in irvine last week because the shutter is splattering oil on the sensor.

at first, i tried to deal with the issue locally by having the sensor cleaned 3x at a cost of about $150. i also wasted about $50 on swabs trying to clean the oil off myself so let's call it 200 bucks.

yesterday i got the camera back from irvine and i waited until today to do the f22 sky test ..... because i just knew i wasn't going to be happy when i saw the results.

and today i am not.

the sensor tho cleaner, is still filthy, and so i have to wonder if the service hack also did a half-ass job on cleaning the shutter mechanism that was the subject of the service notice?

and you probably know what i think!

i called the service center and i let estella have it. to her credit she offered to send me a label and have the camera overnighted and then mail it back to me even in coeur d'alene, where we will eventually land but who wants to go through all that hassle?

so i'll take the camera on vacation and i'll have to use the clone and healing tool on every stopped down picture i process just like i have had to do since day one.

i should also note that when i have had the sensor cleaned locally there wasn't one single visible dust spot @ f22 viewed @ 100% but off course the next time i use the camera there are oil splatters.

in the past i have only had praise for canon service but today they are at the top of my sh*t list. i just can't believe a canon service hack could not return my camera with a clean sensor and i have to conclude -- but will confirm later -- that he did a half ass job on the rest of the service.

Sorry to hear this Ed, serious hassle. I would seriously rattle their cage. Can any of the local reps assist? That is about the only thing I can think of. If you need a contact name and phone number let me know (via PM please), but it may muddy the water even more.

Canon has a huge building on North First st. and I know some of the photo reps work out of there. They have helped me in the past but not with anything related to your issue.

Hmmm, you're lucky to get half-assed service. I'm so used to quarter-assed service that half-assed would be an improvement! In any case that sucks to hear.

you have every right to be pi$$ed about this Ed.
they can do better than that and we all who have sent anything to Irvine know it.
my 24-70 took 2 trips, 1 to fix the loose focus ring, and 2nd time to clean all the dirt out from repair 1.

then at times we get exactly what we asked for.

hope this 2nd attempt resolves this for ya............

Les -- thanx. when i get back from vacation i'll send the camera in and if it's not perfect next time i'll PM you.

right now i'm in acceptance that there's nothing i can do except what i've been doing since the day i got this camera... clone out the dark spots.

Considering what I have heard about Canon Canada, I have no intentions of sending my 5D in for the mirror fix.

I sent my 40D a couple of weeks ago, with the excuse that the focusing was not always right on. Actually an excuse to send it in before the warranty expired for a once over.

I would have thought they would have least cleaned the viewfinder/sensor/anything. Nope. Just sent it back with the "performs to specification" work order. They received it on a Thursday, completed on a Tuesday.

PS: They sent it back in he same packaging and padding that I used. They probably didn't even look at it.

I'm sorry, but this seems a bit petty. You sent in a working camera and they looked at it and confirmed that is was working. They even had the audacity to re-use your packing materials instead of throwing them away and wasting resources on new ones? The horror!! I think the OP has a valid complaint, but you are just bummed you couldn't scam your way into a free cleaning. That is not really a valid complaint in my mind.

i think canon irvine has a better reputation than that :D.

you know to admit your flagship DSLR is defective because of a overly-lubricated shutter mechanism is humbling but the responsible thing to do.

but to return that camera from service with spots on the sensor is flat-out insulting.

canon issued a service notice about oil splatters and said they would service these camera under warranty....so i guess that's a recall.

Thats a tough break.

Unfortunately today this is seeming to be getting more commonplace with items.:(

And of course in your case what is the ultimate final repair procedure to correct the problem?

yeah right :D.

it's been a bad service week for me. i went in for a root canal on monday, and immediately i became concerned when the doctor wasn't listening to me.

i told her i wasn't numb enough enough but she had to verify that with a drill bit to an exposed nerve. she gave me a few more shots hit the nerve again and then i could see she was getting frustrated.

she said i needed to relax but by this time my heart was hammering and i was starting to hyperventilate. she gave me more shots and then stuck the metal probe into the nerve and i screamed and about came out of the seat.

she then gave me a shot directly into the nerve and said the only way she could get me numb was too expose more nerve and then more shots into the nerve. i'll tell you, after the first shot in the nerve there was just no way i could voluntarily subject myself to that again.

i felt like i was being waterboarded and i honestly believe that the adrenalin was cancelling the affects of the painkiller.

she left me for about five minutes and i decided i had had it.

she came back and said, "there's going to be more pain but we're almost there." this was more than an hour into the procedure.

"i'm finished" i told her. "please but a filling in the tooth so i can leave."

so i'm going on vacation probably without my root canal and possibly with a sensor that's still throwing oil on my sensor.

yeah it was a bad service week :D!

Big time sucks on the oily sensor.......but the silver lining is that you are coming to what has to be THE most beautiful state in the Union - IDAHO. Photo ops abound in the Coeur D' Alene area. Have a blast up there.
