I've have a bit of an oil/grease problem with my shutter too. It means I usually do a wet cleaning after I use it...it's not too bad, but even a small speck of dirt annoys me.

Someone I work with has a Nikon D3...he took it to the local Nikon service centre (wish there was a local Canon service centre near here!) for a service, and mentioned to them that he was getting a bit of splatter from the shutter. They took the camera and replaced the shutter and sensor!! (no charge - it was under waranty)...almost made me want to switch to Nikon

i got back from vacation last week and called the canon service center in irvine. i spoke with estella, the same gal i complained to when my 1ds mark III was returned with dirty sensor.

i still haven't received the mailing label that she said i would get via e-mail last week. i'll be calling her again this afternoon.......

it was nice....but to be honest nothing special compared to what we have around here ... much closer :D.

i did enjoy the drive from idaho to I-5 in weed, CA. the area around klamath falls was gorgeous and i saw for the first time yellow bellied marmots by the side of the road!

in idaho i was disappointed by the lack of wildlife, and we looked morning and evenings. i did see one juvenile bald eagle, a coyote and three moose. the only deer i saw were roadkill.

Going to have to disagree with you a bit there - Lake Cour D' Alene is very unique and the scenery there is at least a bit different than anything I have ever seen in Northern or Central California from my travels. Sounds like you maybe should have explored the surrounding area more.

Plus it's NOT California - so that has to count for something! ;)

I have a question:

If half-ass service is bad, which is the good service - full-ass or no-ass? ...

I like a full frame ass myself... ;)

What a bad story. I live only an hour's drive from Irvine and drive in my equipment. I'm waiting to hear the good ending to your story. You are more patient than I am. I would be on the phone to Japan by now if I was you.

This maybe off topic but my 5d (mkI) had a visit with canon nj 4 times. Same problem each time the power cable would fall out. You would think the 2nd time it happened they could fix it. Needless to say 8 weeks of the camera going to canon, me getting it opening the box and putting the camera back in box to have them fix it, yes came to me not working 4 time! Now I have Mark II, problem fixed by me and $2600

This doesn't comfort me much.. I just sent my EF400/5.6L USM to NJ for service. AF not working correctly plus everything shot from this lens seems out of focus (both MF and AF wise) I am hoping that they actually look at it and fix it. I really can't do without this lens for a long period of time.

If you are still getting poor service, cut out the monkies in between and go stright to the top, I have found this does work as the higher management does not like to be bothered and will just pay for a problem to go away, good luck, don`t let them grind you down.

yeah, don't bank on getting great customer service. it's just not how it works. they do good job while the product is in service, but personal skills are lacking.

Ive got a problem now where I underexpose by about 3 stops through the VF and am spot on in LV after sending my 1DIII into NJ.

I am pretty sure its the focus screen as it is a custom screen and had a custom calibration which is gone and removed from the camera now :(
