Ed,
Sorry to hear your issues. Lloyd is correct that 1/2 ass is better than the 1/4 the Canadians get.

My mirror reinforcement fell off my 5d!!!! So its the 3rd trip in less than 2 months. One of the glued reinforcement pieces shot out at my 85L. I was not pleased.

I now speak to the technical supervisor at customer service then he speaks to the "repair center's" supervisor.

Ed have you ever considered using the copperhill wet system? They now sell a magnifying led light to inspect the sensor.

Just got my 1D3 back from the latest recall (UK). Haven't had a chance to check how clean the sensor is, but there's a splodge and smear on the focussing screen.

<sigh>

Man I'm sorry to hear about Canon customer service. Considering the amount spent for the product you'd think they have gold level service.

You guys are scaring me, honestly. I want to send my 18-55 IS lens in to have its calibration checked, but I'm concerned it might start a long series of resending it to undo harm caused by them?

I'm not sure I would spend any money sending a kit lens back and forth between Canon and yourself......

Well, that's why I've been hesitant. I read some people (including some reviews) who show great photos (100% cropped) with the kit lens and say it's not really worth spending $1000 to upgrade, and then others say that the kit lens is fine, but don't expect too much from it.

In my case, I have three lenses (18-55 IS, 55-250 IS, and the 50mm f/1.8 ), and the 18-55 is the softest of the bunch. I truly love the photos I get from the other two lenses.

Here is the latest on my 400mm 5.6L :

" Dear Doug :

This notice is to advise you that we have received your equipment for evaluation and repair at a Canon Factory Service Center. We will now process your equipment for repair.

Please note that in the unlikely event that any additional internal damage is found due to liquid / water, sand, corrosion, battery leakage or impact (such as dropping the unit), a revised estimate will be sent for your authorization, since these conditions are specifically excluded from warranty coverage.

Thank you for purchasing Canon products and for allowing us this opportunity to serve you.

Best Regards,
Canon Factory Service Center"

Standard I know.. but just what will they find on a new lens that did not focus correctly?

as the lens turns will continue....

Can I add to the thread about Canon service?

Sent in my XS for a stuck pixel cluster and sticky shutter button. They replaced the top panel for the shutter button and sounds like they replaced the sensor. Get the camera back all happy and excited after 2.5 weeks. Then I take some test images and somehow they bunged up the focus calibration. It backfocuses by probably 200% of the DOF on all my lenses. But no stuck pixels! So back to Canon it went today. Nice that I can miss all the summer holidays and the birth of my newest child waiting for Canon to fix the problems they created.

of course the label wasn't there.

she sent the fedex label again and canon has my 1ds mark III. i figure i should have the camera back by wednesday.

I got UPS ground  I guess they take care of the 1 series a little better as could be expected. Hopefully it works this time, but I have lost a lot of confidence in my camera now.

i know how you feel. i have never been able to use the 1ds mark III stopped down without cloning out oil/dust spots.

well canon received my 1ds mark III on monday and it's friday. i called canon this morning and at first i wasn't able to get anything beyond 7-10 days until i got mad at the receptionist and got a manager on the line.

he says my camera is in the shop but not finished. i said i was told the service -- cleaning the sensor and rechecking the shutter for excess oil -- would be expedited since this was a return trip.

he said he'd try to get the camera finished today.

Ed,not to beat a dead pixel but it's 7:31 here in NYC. Did they call yet?
Good Luck
I just bought a demo tokina 50-135 f/2.8, sharp like an "L",I couldn't wait to save another 3-4hundred for a Canon. At my age waiting becomes less of an option every day. All The Best, Steve B.

Little bit of a long read.

I have something to add as well. I took in my 450d into canon mississauga for a sensor clean. I get a call in 48 hours that its ready for pick-up. I come in picked it up. So i did the F/22 sky test for dust. it had the same 2 specs of dust on the sensor. I go in the next day. The lady attaches a lens and does the same test. She says she cant find it. I took it off her hands and i took the shot, there it was, and she says "oh". She brings it back in to one of the techs for a clean. Assuming everything is fine and worked out i left. I did the test again and bam, three more specs of dust in another location, and now my viewfinder is dirty also. I went in today and told them the situation. The lady used a loupe and she said she cant see anything. I took the shot again and she said "oh". I also said the viewfinder is dirty after the sensor cleaning. And you know what she said "we dont clean viewfinders".I cant believe the lack of quality control at this facility.

I think in this one area digital is still a little behind the 8 ball. I don't think the camera makers thought this section out real well either. I have scratchs and dust bunnies on my 1dmkIIn, and I just live with them. I have tried cleaning, expensive brushes, air - no air, loads of crap - all of it. One shoot outside and the crap is right back on the sensor. I just added it to my PP.. I don't really think there is much else I can do. I have talked to Canon reps re: this and got a blank stare for the most part. You can have either Canon or an outside company do a filter change, but I really don;t think that is a good long term answer. Self cleaning is really needed and it needs to be much better than it is now.

Just my 002 centavos worth.
