I think in this one area digital is still a little behind the 8 ball. I don't think the camera makers thought this section out real well either. I have scratchs and dust bunnies on my 1dmkIIn, and I just live with them. I have tried cleaning, expensive brushes, air - no air, loads of crap - all of it. One shoot outside and the crap is right back on the sensor. I just added it to my PP.. I don't really think there is much else I can do. I have talked to Canon reps re: this and got a blank stare for the most part. You can have either Canon or an outside company do a filter change, but I really don;t think that is a good long term answer. Self cleaning is really needed and it needs to be much better than it is now.

Just my 002 centavos worth.

Les -- keeble&shcucat will get your sensor perfectly clean. the tech even keeps before and after shots on file i assume for liability purposes.

yeah right :D.

it's been a bad service week for me. i went in for a root canal on monday, and immediately i became concerned when the doctor wasn't listening to me.

i told her i wasn't numb enough enough but she had to verify that with a drill bit to an exposed nerve. she gave me a few more shots hit the nerve again and then i could see she was getting frustrated.

she said i needed to relax but by this time my heart was hammering and i was starting to hyperventilate. she gave me more shots and then stuck the metal probe into the nerve and i screamed and about came out of the seat.

she then gave me a shot directly into the nerve and said the only way she could get me numb was too expose more nerve and then more shots into the nerve. i'll tell you, after the first shot in the nerve there was just no way i could voluntarily subject myself to that again.

i felt like i was being waterboarded and i honestly believe that the adrenalin was cancelling the affects of the painkiller.

she left me for about five minutes and i decided i had had it.

she came back and said, "there's going to be more pain but we're almost there." this was more than an hour into the procedure.

"i'm finished" i told her. "please but a filling in the tooth so i can leave."

so i'm going on vacation probably without my root canal and possibly with a sensor that's still throwing oil on my sensor.

yeah it was a bad service week :D!

Frack dude, thats just terrible :(

I hate to see what you're going through on Canon's flagship DSLR, they should be bending over backwards to fix things for you or any owner of a 1DsIII :(

Canon Service at irvine is horse sh!t, i have had a 40D they totally wrecked and ended up claiming it on insurance and got a new one.. they put scratches and a huge gouge right into the body. was basically new when it went in. and looked like a beat up pile when i got it back. all the rubber grip around the camera was ripped off and replaced without re-applying the adheasive or new double sided tape whatever they use. the info screen was all out of place inside. i dealt with other managers. i even took pictures of the camera before it went in because i had a feeling something might happen? just do this incase something does happen with anything i send in for warranty, if its camera stuff or not. anyways i delt with the managers and they are just a joke, they didnt give a sh!t period. they just said send it back. and we'll see what we can do. so they sent it back. info screen still out of place. rubber grip all fookerd. they put a new top cover on it where the scratches were but they put a new deep scratch on the new cover in another spot??????? WTF i sent it back three times then decided to really put up a stink, but they just said send it back and we'll see what we can do. they told me either take it or leave it in the end. so i said nope. i'm done with you and just put it through my insurance. its a floater policy with state farm in canada. so it doesnt up your house insurance. canon service is awful. i wrote letters in point form eat time. and also had an in depth letter attached with detailed info about the issues and problem.. but they don't even read nor do whats on the list. even in point form. awful awful ppl to deal with again. they done awful things to other camera's and lenses i've sent in too. they have no idea what they are doing. nore do they care.

anyways,

Joel

I read that now, thats good to hear :)

However your dentist story makes me feel quite uneasy given i have to go see a dentist and have been procrastinating because they all seem...shall we say...incompetent in my area :(

Did anyone every use the Canon factory service in Jamesburg in NJ to fix your Canon camera? Just curious, I brought my to this place and they did not fix my Canon 50D the first time. I have to bring it back in mid August 2009.

Ed, you have an incompetent dentist. Go find another one.

If you need a root canal, you should be going to an endodontist anyway. There's a reason why dentists go through four more years of school on top of their regular education. You don't go to a GP if you want to have your heart examined. Or to put it in photographic terms, you don't hire a landscape photographer who shoots Velvia with a 4x5 to do your wedding...unless you're getting married on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and you are happy with maybe a dozen photos, tops.

You would be surprised to know how much incompetence goes on in dentistry...a lot of providers go ahead and do procedures that are either not needed, or do it half-assed not out of malice but because they simply suck. You're okay for a few weeks--if you're lucky--and then you have to come back because the crown popped off, or the tooth gets infected because they didn't clean out the necrotic pulp completely. The situation is not quite as bad as photography--after all, random people with disposable income can't just suddenly decide to set up a dental office and take patients--but dental school ain't exactly the kind of barrier to entry as it used to be.

OT:

Its generally 2 yrs in addition to dental school for an endodontic specialty. Plus GPs can do root canals also, just have to find a competent one (the hard part). And even endodontists can be incompetent, as the OP has already voiced.

Mr Ed Rader, true your tooth is "dead" now and thats why it doesnt hurt anymore. But you have increased your risk for possible infections because the root canal was not completed. Please follow up with your provider.

Personally, I always try to find healthcare providers through word-of-mouth.

Back on topic:

It sucks to hear about Canon service, since Irvine is the closest service center to me. Maybe we should start a thread on 3rd party service centers that do good work.

So let us say i'll receive it coming monday august the third, thats a whopping 70 days for a simple mirror fix! New lap record.

One could FeD Ex to NJ and jus pay the freight out of pocket. Would be a small price to pay for good service. On the other side of it Youtube documentation, would be a slap in the face to canon that they do not need now. When it is true it is not slander just a statement of fact. They wouldn't need that floating around the net and maybe ( doubtful) might check into there lacking service issue's. One of the reasons I have stayed with Canon is to date I have always had good service. If that changes and I can not get satisfaction then. is the time to think about jumping ship.

I have no statistics, but I did send a BG-E4 and my 5D to Irvine and the BG-E4 came back more broken than I sent it. It at least worked before, although not correctly. It took them two weeks to send it back broken. Sent it right out to Jamesburg and it was repaired and sent back in 3 days after receipt. Works just fine now.

They also did a great job earlier this year on my 24-105 after I dropped it.

I certainly wont waste any more time sending things to Irvine. No facts, just one bad experience and 2 great from Jamesburg.

I have had nothing but stellar service from Canon USA, I have used them on a few occasions both for a recall and update in Virginia, as well as a few occasions at the Dayton NJ center, which is about 45 minutes from me. They alwasy are helpful and turn the repairs around fast and are super courteous so I cannot complain whatsoever

My experience with Canon Irvine or Canon in general has been stellar so far. One of the reasons I'm staying with Canon.

Sounds like you'd have to pony up for a CPS membership in order to get somewhat decent service. I've got some dirt stuck in the viewfinder, but have been trying for months to get it off. I might as well leave it if Canon service is going to be crude.
