Trying to decide between the Canon 10-22 & 17-40L, for my vacation in Aug at Bar Harbor Maine. Should have a 50D this weekend.

Wonderful place Bar Harbor - we hiked around that area and Cadillac Mountain 10 years ago back when I was still lugging my medium format gear.

I have the 17-40 and really love it but that's on a FF. On your crop the 10-22 will be similar at the wide end and you could get some really nice low angle shots of rock structures with great DOF. Tough choice. With that type of scenery though, the sun and sky, make sure you a take a high quality CPL with you. It will give you some pretty spectacular results. - Stu

Thanks, I read the 10-22 is a really good match with the 50D.

A lot of folks here own and really enjoy using it. Do you own a CPL?

The more expensive multi-coated ones are the ones you want to consider. These will improve saturation and contrast, reduce lens glare/flare, and can darken the sky nicely when used at right angles to the sun.

The better ones made my B+W, Hoya Pro1, Heliopan... these are your top notch considerations.

10-22mm and a CPL will make for a better vacation in Bar Harbor.

You can take my 100-400 L away when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers.

Several on FM in $575 range. Not much better than $600 though.

It really depends on the style of your photography. Last year when I went to Bar Harbor the only lens I had was the 28-135 IS kit lens which came with 40D. I found this focal length to be ideal. You can check a few pics which I took using this combo in this link

BTW Bat Harbor and Maine in general is an amazing place. If you haven't made any travel arrangements, let me know I can suggest a couple of good places to stay in Bar Harbor.

Thanks for the info, I will take my 28-135 (got my 50D) but still looking for a Canon 10-22 or maybe a Tokina 11-16. Should I be looking for a different wide zoom.

BTW, staying at the Bayview hotel.
