Water droplet Help

I just tried my hand at water droplet photography and what a disaster! I used an opaque light blue and clear pyrex. The shots are very washed out with little color, despite putting gels on my flash. I saw pics from this guys galary which are unreal, and am wondering what kind of dish you think he's using, how many lights, and what kind of surfaces things are reflecting off of...

Martin Waugh has been doing these shots for years so I guess his website can be a bit daunting. One of the best resources for info on these shots can be found right here, in fact just a way down the page under this thread.
