I need some bag recommendations. I have the Canon backpack. Despite its mixed reviews I like a lot of things about it, namely the size and general layout. I have issues with the zippers, I use carabiners to lock them, the straps arent comfortable, and the build quality is kind of iffy. Can any of you direct me toward a bag with a similar layout, similar size, but a step up in quality and comfort?

I have the Tamrac Expedition 5 and I'm quite happy with it. Both in its comfort and build. I'd start by going to the Tamrac site, or the LowePro site and look at their backpack offerings. They'll have all of the dimensions and specs for you and usually cutaway views of the various bags so you can see how they are loaded.

I have looked at their sites, but even with dimensions and cutaways I don't get a real sense of them. Maybe its because I'm more of a tactile person. Unfortunately the nearest legitimate photo store is probably 90 miles away, so I cant see them in person.

I have that bag too (I got it for X-mas)and have about the same complaints..mostly that it's not so comfortable. Works well so far with my gear and will soon need to upgrade due to I need more room.

I have been looking into a Lowepro and Tamrac Sling type bags. They work like a backpack and then slide to your front for easy convenience. Take a look and give that type a test drive. I've yet to get my hands on one to test in store.

You can also try going over to cambags.com and look there. I know what you mean. Picking out a bag is like shopping for clothes or picking out furniture. You really need to handle the merchandise. I'd just try my best using those sites to find something that approximates the size and configuration of your existing bag and then buy it online from a vendor with a good return policy. Also, it would help if you let us know what gear you are putting in the bag.

I'm happy with the ThinkTank Rotation 360. It's a backpack that lets you access half of it without taking it off your back. www.rotation360.com (external link)

I have recently got a Lowepro Primus AW and find it to be really comfortable. I wore it for a three hour walk this afternoon without any issue. I don't have much kit, so it all fits in the bottom compartment, leaving the top free for plenty of other stuff, clothes, food, etc. A coat, maps, and even a laptop in a pouch can fit in the pocket on the front. And having a 50D, I can easily remove the camera out of the quick access flap on the side. The only things that I would this bag to have would be more velcro dividers (I just grabbed some from my other Lowepro bags) and some small side or front pockets. I would not have bought this bag if it was at its very scary RRP, but I found it on Amazon for only £59.
