Shooting a Fox

Over the last week + we have had a fox in our back yard barking (screaming is more like it) and driving our dog (and us) nuts in the evening. So if it is going to be hanging around is there anything that folks in here know about their behavior that might give me a good chance to get a decent shoot of him? Or am I just going to have to keep the camera close by and just get lucky?

You could try putting some food out. Our local fox comes in the garden every evening (and sometimes during the day) to finish off the bird food. She seems to particularly like the sultanas. Over time we've got her quite used to people walking inside around while she's eating and she's now happy to stay put when a lens is pointed at her.

you can call it in. purse your lips on your hand and suck-it sounds wierd, but you want to make a squeak/squeal noise. vary the intensity and pitch, sas well as the length of sound. the fox will think it it a curious noise, like a distressed rabbit, and be only too happy to investigate

We have thousands of fox here on the Island and they come right up to people once they learn that they'll get fed. They tend to always come back to the place where they found food so you might try putting out something for it. But, PLEASE, do NOT continue to feed it after you get your shot. They tend to become dependent on free meals as well.

I love my foxes that come into my and next doors garden, I have 2 of them, and my parents have 2 adults and about 6 cubs...

Here is one took this morning

Foxes are a bit of a menace in England, urban foxes can only survive by scavenging in bins and the rural foxes cause havoc with livestock, I remember cleaning up a lambing field in North Wales a few years ago where a fox had almost wiped out all of the lambs in a night. My brother in Law has a 6000 Free Range egg unit and he looses about 200 chickens per season to foxes and that is despite us shooting them every opportunity we get.
