I still have a D30 as my main DSLR Body.I am thinking of upgrading to a 20D [1/2 price compared to what i paid for the D30 LOL] BUT i am juggling ideas.
Do i keep D30 and go for the 100- 400 L IS lens or
Do i upgrade to a 20D and upgrade the lenses later.
I wonder if anyone has both the D30 and the 20D and could post some comparison photos using same subject ,lens, settings.
Is there a big quality jump from the D30 to the 20D?
Many thanks Gary

Having owned a D30,10D,D60 and now a 1D2 but not a 20D, In reference to the last part of your question I think the jump in picture quality will not be noticeable if you only print to 6 x 4 inches......however this hobby we all invest in tells us to print bigger because most of the time, it looks better therefore the 20D will then pay dividends in final output.
It also strikes me that a camera that is approx. 5 years down the line is probably gonna operate better too not to mention more speedily and more accurate. I'm basing this on first hand D30 familiarity and an awful lot of what I've read about the 20D.
The 20D has more accurate colour, quicker processing internally, more precise AF and much cleaner ISO's thus extending your usable scope.
Nice camera as the D30 is/was, it's now a dinosaur in digital terms so that must tell you something too.
Pop on over to dpreview and check out the comparison shots and look closely at finer detail. Print some and check 'em out.

Regards

Greg

As far as handling and speed,. the 20D will so completely smoke the D30 it's not funny..

But the decision to get glass Vs. a camera body is never easy.

Usually I side on the side of good new glass... as the change from one body to another is often so incremental...

But you have skipped several generations by holding on to the pioneering D30...
Personally I would say it's time for an upgrade to the 20D. You will not be disappointed,.. and if you can swing it,. hold onto your D30 for a back up/second body,.. rather than selling it for mere pennies on the dollar.. (the full kit is lucky to get $400.00) :)

Thanks for replies,i will have a look at dpreview. To think that the D30 was cutting edge and is now a dinosaur LOL.Having said that it's a lovely camera and for what it's worth now i'll keep it as a backup.
Thanks all, a trip to the local camera shop and a play is called for methinks.
