I'm looking forward to numerous photo ops next month, when my family vacation takes us to Yosemite, the SF Bay Area, and SoCal for Disneyland, Universal Studios and Knottsberry Farm. And, my son's graduation.

So, what's to decide? Well, whether to bring my new, compact G10 or my aging, but still reliable 30D, with it's 70-200 L, 10-22 and 17-55 EF-S lenses. I even checked out prices for the 50D. Tempting but I better save for the trip. Travel light or travel with camera back pack??

Any feedback is welcome and appreciated.

I have always wondered where people living in Hawaii went for vacation!

I would take both! The G10 will be nice to carry in the amusement parks & the Bay and the SLR for Yosemite.

Hello mauimike,
I did that trip last year and IMO....I would take both....you are going to the edge of heaven you know!

If you take both.....
I would leave the 70-200 L home and put the G10 in its place in the bag. Get a small camera pouch that fits on your belt for the G10 so it is always on your side ... even when you sleep

If I had to choose it would be the G10 because the only good camera is the one you have with you and you would be more likely to have it with you all the time.

.....You have to have the G10 just to shoot panoramas of SF bridge, Yosemite,

Two questions ... what type of images do you want to take where you need the benefits the 30D image size over the G10 RAW image....

How many times in the last year did you leave your 30D home because you said to yourself....ahk...I don't want to carry that....

How this helps and enjoy your trip....and takes lots of film, i mean SD cards

Best regards,
mteetank

Hands down take both :). You'll avoid kicking yourself later when you see "the shot" of a lifetime but you left your ___ lens at home. The G10 is so (relatively) small you could stick it in your camera bag for those times when you really cannot take a large DSLR (out to dinner, etc).

thanks everyone for the replies. i'm sure that i'll end up taking both. even here on maui, there has been an occasion or two when i only brought the g10 and wished i brought the 30d also. not that the g10 didn't perform, just that the lenses, especially the 10-22 and the 70-200, add that extra versatility to the mix.

i was checking the lensmate adapters to add telephoto to the g10, but no purchase yet.

thanks again.
