I've been shooting the the 1DMKII for a while now and it's my go to camera eventhough I have access to 30D and 40D too (don't own these by the way). I've been using it for sports, landscape, and recently portraits.

I really like this camera and the 1D series overall.

A friend is offering a 5D with grip for a good price and I wonder if I should go for it. What I'm afraid is with 2 cameras, I'll have a tough time picking between them and end up using one more than the other and have one just collecting dust.

For those that have the 5D and 1DMKII(N) which one you use most and are you just keeping the other around for emergency (backup) purposes only?

I have had both of those and to those I have added a 5D2 and a 1DMKIII. 3 bodies remain in my kit bag, but to be honest I'm totally confused about which I like best. I can't categorically say that the 1D3 is the best camera out of these, because the 5D2 produces some very nice work. My previous 5D was fine. The 1DMKIIN also performs extremely well in action photography. I just love the feel and action of this and the 1DMKIII. Then there are the lenses. Different performance when fitted to each body. My advice: Choose your main weapon and stick to it!
For me... something needs to go soon!

Thanks Luke Cern, yeah that's my concern too that I'd be liking one more than the other and just have it sits around as backup is a waste, $1k as backup is alot :)

Depends on what you shoot. I use the MK3 and MK2 for my sports shooting. The 5D for landscapes and portraits. My wifes uses our 20 & 30D cams for shooting sports and landscapes. The 10D is an old friend. ;)

Ditto deford. I bought my 5D mk1 as a toe-in-the-water exercise for full-frame. I wasn't sure I could go back to the old menus etc. after the 1Dmk3. I found that this wasn't a problem at all because the 5D came out for specific conditions - i.e. usually static/artistic/considered shots rather than the blast of sports.

Ended up loving the 5D sufficiently to get the mk2 recently - will sell the mk1 when I can get around to it.

:D 1D Mk III:D 5D mk2 - mk1 just sold:confused:

Your timing is good. I sold my 5D when "talk on the street plus a new model" pushed the price of the the classic 5D down. Now the talk is about "how good it really is" and secondhand prices have risen. There are other reasons for this of course. You'll be surprised just how more capable the 5D2 is, and apart from sports, the application boundary is far more grey.

Sonny, nice price. If you doing less of sports shooting I would go for the 5d. I was thinking of selling the 1dmk2 and picking FF 1dsmk2 but no money.

Hi Bobby, I shoot less and less sports now (only u10 and u12 soccer) and more into portraits and events stuffs.

Same boat as you and I think the 1dsmkII would be awesome.

Sonny,

I have been shooting with the 5D Classic and the 1DM3 for some time now and for me it works well. Actually, the 5D without a grip is my walk-around camera and there are weeks when the 1D just sits there, but especially once Spring and then Summer hit the 1D is my Tool for wildlife, sports, etc. But the 5D can be a thing of love for things like people and portraits as well as scenic/landscape stuff.

I enjoy the 5D Classic so much that I haven't even seriously considered upgrading to the 5D2 any time soon. I'm sure I would love the II, but I am very contented with the Classic for a whole lot of my shooting.

Go for it, and you will find that your 17-40 and 24-70 will have a breath of new life.

I've got exactly that combo, and I do probably like the 5d a little more for the lesser postprocessing of images from it, but I do really like both cameras. I do a lot of different things, and I tend to leave the 24-70 on the 5d and the 70-200/2.8IS on the 1d2. In general, here's a list of what I grab depending on circumstances:

sports/wildlife: 1d2 ALWAYS
low light performances: the 5d's high ISO wins out
portraits: both, depends on the focal length (see above)
landscapes: 5d

Current: 5DM3, 6D, 8mm fish, 24-105/4IS, 35/2IS, 70-200/2.8IS, 85/1.8, 100-400/IS v1, lensbaby composer with edge 80, 580's and AB800's
Formerly: 80D, 7D, 300D, 5D, 5DM2, 20D, 50D, 1DM2, 17-55IS, 24-70/2.8, 28-135IS, 40/2.8, 50/1.8, 50/1.4, 70-200/4IS, 70-300IS, 70-200/2.8, 100 macro, 400/5.6, tammy 17-50 and 28-75, sigma 50 macro & 100-300

Thanks Tony and Tim...

@Tim, yeah, if I decide to get it, the 24-70 or 17-40 will probably reside on it most of the time and the long lenses will be on the 1D...
