Well I'm outside of my return period. I'm going to go ahead and send it to Canon. On the website, it did say they may change replace the product with another if they can't correct the issue...Will they do that? Probably not. But sitting here doing nothing certainly isn't getting much done.

Sure they will. But do not expect a new lens - you get refurbished from an unknown source. If it is a return - consider yourself lucky. If it is a display item that went through thousands of hands, was dropped a dozen times, and was spit in and rubbed with a sleeve to get rid of the dirt that stuck to it when a cleaning lady used it to get rid of some stubborn substance in the bathroom - not so lucky.

I don't really care. Longs as it "looks" like the one I sent in, and ACTUALLY works. I could really care less. The one I had was brand new and having issues. I rather get something that is a known good. I also recorded all the info so I will know if I get the same one back or not.

Sent today priority. Keeping my fingers crossed that I receive it back faster than advertised (7 days). I will keep you all posted, as this is my first time using Canon service center!

Expecting perfection in a zoom (yes, even an L) is absurd. Perhaps you should stick to the consumer stuff so you can rest easy knowing you didn't spend as much. And no, that's not me being a jerk; that's me being practical.

Expecting perfection in anything is absurd. How can you call 85/1.2L perfect if it cannot do such simple thing as to zoom to 50mm that my 28-135 can ?
Each lens has its purpose and "L" zooms occupy the biggest niche.

Vadim, are asking why the 85 1.2 doesn't zoom? It's a 1.2 aperture. It's designed for low light and shallow DOF. The 28-135 is no good in low light, and has a very hard time creating a shallow DOF. Sadly each and EVERY lens has it's pros and cons.

On another note:
Canon "accepted On average, how long should it take to receive the lens? I know on their site it states up to 10 days. Should I expect that or longer? Or is there a possibility that it may drop by earlier?

It's perfect for taking a picture of a black cat in a coal mine by candle light.

Normally it is about 1 week, at least it was for me. One case was that it was 3 weeks for me but that was because I raised some noise with the consumer protections agencies so Canon probably decided to check the quality of work. But I cannot complain because my gear finally was fixed.

Tere are no black cats in coal mines, let alone candles ( safety issues ) So the perfection is theoretical only.

A perfect lens has:
Maximum apperture 0,
Minimum ~,
Minimum focus distance 0 mm.
All aberations at 0.
Distortions at 0.
A dot of infinitely small size still reflected at the focus plane.
Zoom: from 0 to ~.
Weight: zero gramm.
Dimentions: 0x0x0 mm.
Focusing speed: 0 sec.

What else? Shift 0 to ~ ! Tilt 360 degrees.

I could go on but I am lazy typist.

Bet ya there are more black cats in coal mines than that lens you describe.

Is this a problem that you saw repeated in many images or was it only present in this image?

The CA was only in a few images (similar situations) but I have kept on running ionto thefocus issue. I have side by side shotd with the Tammy, and the Tammy was 100% sharper.

24-70 is a good lens but its not perfect it has CA most noticeably at large apertures and when zoomed all the way in or out. If you want perfection than use a 70-200 F4 IS or 85mm prime stopped down to 2.8.
Or always shoot at F8 with 24-70.

I know we already discussed this, but I bought a $1200 lens, this should out perform a $300 Tamron. I'm not willing to trade up sharpness and no CA for CA, soft pictures, and fast focus. I believe Canon will resolve this issue. As mentioned before, apparently this lens doesn't have the best track record for coming from the factory top notch. Worse comes to worse, I will just get another Tamron, but I hope it doesn't come to that, as I do really want a working 24-70 L.

People tend to justify their purchases and glorify the brick as a benchmark. For my purposes I use this lens when time is not kind. I'm typically using the lens in the 35ish to 70mm range and almost never in the 24mm range. f/3.2 to f/4 is a common aperature I use it at. The 17-55IS sure seems like a rock solid performer compared to the 24-70L. At f8 most lenses perform well.

Build, USM silent speed, contrast and colour is what I like about the brick. Sharpness is good but it seems the 17-55IS puts the "brick" to shame". Many lovers of the brick love the performance of this lens in the studio where f8 and smaller aperatures are used.

Simply send in the lens and they "should" resolve the problem.
