I just ordered an X-Rite EODIS2 Eye-One Display 2 but untill it gets here and for the last several months I've been using a free software program that seems to work pretty well.

Of course it's based on how well you answer the calibration questions as well. Here is the file link:

EDIT: See posts 8-10

Mac or PC?

PC: Adobe gamma will get you in the right ballpark, & it's free. You can check the calibration a bit better in Post #6 of this (wordy) thread:

Where to get Adobe gamma for your PP program. (external link)

No, it's not.
There's a reason Adobe stopped shipping it with PS.

No, it's not.

My screw up! I didn't remember that he was on a laptop.
Personally, with the difference in small changes in the viewing angle on mine, I only use it for culling images & maybe small exposure corrections before RAW conversion. But only when I don't have the time to get on the CRT.

I gave you the link to a decent FREE one. In fact I just set up a WHCC account and the test prints I had done looked pretty close to what my laptop screen looks like but the key is angle of your laptop screen and making sure it's at a similar angle whenever you edit pictures as the angle used when you "calibrated" your monitor using that software (I just ordered the eye2 because I want it a bit more exact and I believe it also does luminence).
