Goodies to Go With Your Canon 5D Mark II

A number of companies have come out with various shoulder-mount systems to use with the Canon 5D. As we said in our review, the camera is a beast to hold steady for video. Zacuto showed their systems, and we felt they were ALMOST what you need for professional steadiness. These DSLR "Gunstock" Shooter braces are designed to mount on your shoulder, and are very light but very stable. They range in price from $1,507 for a basic model, up to the pro production model at $5,515. The thing that makes it all work is their Z1 viewfinder, which is a high-quality optic that snaps over the LCD on the back of the camera. It is engineered so that when the camera is on the brace, the eyecup comes into direct contact with your face, providing a third or fourth point of supports (hand, belly, shoulder and face). The Z-Finder itself is a marvel, and Zacuto sells it separately for $395, although demand for it has been so strong that they are massively back-ordered.

GOOD GRIEF! That is insane! I can't imagine spending $3K for the 5DII and do that to it! But it is interesting.

I was looking at the Z-Finder but that seems too to be very high priced.

I wonder what Canon's real video cameras are going to cost and look like. People wanting to use the 5D II for video must really be desperate.

how about, I wonder when canon will just stuff the 5Dii sensor and processor in one of their real video cameras. ;) They've always made really good cameras (video) so they just need to give their existing cameras the capabilities the 5Dii has brought to the table with it's insane sensor (in video terms).

I can tell you that the network sports operations I work for are very, very interested in the 5DMkII as a tool for location video production.

If I were closer to 5 years in the business and not 30, I'd be buying one right farking now. In fact, I'd effort buying more than one and making them available for rental.

5D2 and lenses cost peanuts vs. professional video gear where just a lens can cost you 30-40k. Here's the trend:

All good but prices are ridiculous.

I understand the need to make a living, but shoulder rest + 3 aluminium bars + camera plate for $600? No thanks.

At that rate I'd rather buy a Merlin Steadycam (which is overpriced as well, but at least has some justification for it, as it uses something more mechanically challenging than bars and bolts), same deal, but better stability and more versatile.

Canon Pro camcorder is not that good. Good thing about 5D II is that you can use all the "L" lens for special effect that it would cost if you're going to use the regular video camera. Redrock has similar system for 5D II at $2500. Think about it, it is still a good investment IF you're in the videography business.

Actually, the 5DMkII is a little bit anethma to what TV camera engineering really wants to accomplish.

The enormous ratio of objective lens to sensor size is what gives them ginormous magnification properties. To boot, the need to hold all that gathered light together so that it is clean and error free (even with a 2X Extender rolled in) is what drives the cost of 1000x TV lenses into the six figure realm.

IIRC, even the GL2 has a 7X crop factor with EF lenses...
