Cheers. I got 22.93 seconds.

Is that good?

Its not bad. It does prove that the AMD chips are some way behind the Intels though.
My 3 year old Q6600 scores around 26sec, and a new i7 920 scores around 18 sec.

Of course it's more than enough for most photo editing, especially as your not working with a super high mega pixel camera.

So long and thanks for all the flash

Thing is the six core when using either more apps or when apps finally become heavily threaded would easily beat an i5 or i7 however if the app is only using 1-4 cores it is a a loss as its slower per core.

So for encoding etc its a no brainer as the two extra cores more than make up for the slower per core performance loss (at roughly the same price).

Ive tried DPP on a 8 core 16 thread machine and it just keeps threading which is fantastic, you can get some really good RAW processing numbers out of it by loading up a few jobs and setting all 16 cores to work.

So for now I personally prefer i5 or i7 but it won't be long before the six cores would easily beat the i5 and i7 once apps catch up (provided you aren't going to upgrade in 6-12 months again).

Nice photos David, I can't wait to get to Fiji in 6-7 weeks :) I'll have to make sure I have a 16-35 by then, fairly sure i'm going to get the 16-35 F4 VR over the 14-24 F2.8.

14-24 is meant to be the BEST UWA lens out.

I know the 14-24 is meant to be an amazing wide angle zoom, and at 16mm the 16-35 has quite a bit of distortion. I just feel like I would rather save about $750, and F4 VR makes up for the one stop loss. Also the 14-24 has a huge round element, and I tend to damage them working in a rush. 14mm is also reaaaaaly wide, for how I use it (in dark churches, rarely) the people on the edges would be hugely distorted because of perspective.

As a bonus the 16-35 would also act as a backup lens in case the 24-70 goes down, which means I can skip the 50 F1.4 for now. 70mm F2.8 on full frame is a small enough dof for me for now, but I want the 50mm as backup at some point. I'm spending about $20K on gear, give or take a couple of grand, and i'd be quite happy to save a little now and add it later in the year.

Nice! :) So was Vanuatu good? We nearly went there but opted for Samoa. Is there much to do? Many places to eat out etc? We are starting to talk up another holiday so might be Vanuatu, although Port Douglas has also been mentioned. Hehe, getting excited just thinking about it :)

What lens was it Peter? Might be worth selling it to someone who can fix these things (or thinks they can) and going new?

24-70 :( so I don't think that option will work.

tim wrote in post #10592663 (external link)
Do you know anyone in CPS? It might be cheaper to send it to Toshio in the US than to have it done locally.

Yes I do, but I am mainly pissed off that I sent my camera in for a focus problem, and they didn't fix it but charged me €200. Then when they decide it was the lens and this will cost me €350, they aren't prepared to reduce the cost because of the camera.

I calculated I have spent €1350 on repairs over the last 3 years!!!

€600 for camera & lens (350D & 17-85) after my brother dropped it.
Camera was wrongly adjusted needed to be re done (free)

€200 for same lens re repair as it stopped working 2nd time I used it after original repair. As It was over a year later I had to pay.

€200 for camera focus problem (40D) Not fixed.
€350 now for lens. (24-70)

Yeah i've spent loads on calibration and repairs, though to be fair I do occasionally drop cameras. I think going via CPS will be a better idea, or even better send them to Toshio - he's meant to be the best in the world at Canon camera calibration, and charges reasonably.

Good stuff Tony.

The bulging design of the 14-24mm does seem dodgy, could easily scratch that. But I guess that is the risk you gotta take with photography. The 14mm is also a supreme lens. Close in price to the 16-35mm. Sometimes I feel that if a zoom has such a limited focal length you might as well get a prime lens :p
