The 60D has no PC sync socket, they're trying to get enthusiasts and professionals to buy more expensive cameras.

Narrow DOF doesn't make a good photo. That's one reason I liked crop bodies, more DOF. I might get a crop body some time, for the 70-200 at receptions.

Exactly, from a marketing point of view it's perfect, and when you consider SLR tech is becoming more available to the everyman, and it's easier to use, the way its targetted is perfect, or close at least. 99% of people actuallt buying an SLR won't even know what a sync socket is let alone ever have cause for using one.

And as for the narrow DOF not making good photos, true, as a stand alone point it doesn't, but try taking it off me, and I'll kick off. I personally find it exceptionally useful, and rarely shoot a close portrait at anything grater than f/2.8 on FF obviously. :)

Cheers, Dave.

My initial response to the 60D was a WTF have they done!
Then you realise they have been very clever. It looks like they are creating to distinct line, a consumer line (xxxD and xxD) and a pro line XD. Each line which will have two levels of body, a light weight basic one and a more comprehensive higher end one.
Build quality and performance, as well as cost will be the two basic things that distinguish the two lines.

People will make a lot of noise about the SD card, but really, is that big a deal? SD cards are more common in electronic devices and cheap enough to buy.
Likewise with the PC Sync, how many people actually use it any more?
Radio triggers are becoming cheaper and more common and nearly all of them mount in the hot shoe. The PC sync simply isn't needed any more.

I don't however like the limited control layout, that to me looks like a clear and determined attempt to dumb down the camera. But, then I'm no longer in it's target market.
I do like the proper flip out LCD and really wish the 5D2 had one.

I hear Canon make some really nice crop bodies with excellent glass that is very sharp when stopped down for that extra DOF.:rolleyes:

So long and thanks for all the flash

Goes off to check 1Dsmk4 thread

.... nothing yet

One great advantage when you have no money is you stop focusing on gear and more on utalising what you have. I think I need some more theory in design, that or a new bunch of scenes.

The art dept at school just got a Canon 1000D, said to the sports dept that they need a 500F4 :)

I will stick with 70-200 + 1.4 TC. Now a canon 200-400 F4 IS would be nice or a Canon 14-24 F4 with no protuding front bulb or a way at least toget filters on/in

Yeah the 70-300 could be a good option to replace my 70-200 f4, but looks like it is going to retail at close to $3000. Cheaper to pick up at 300 f4 instead....

I am curious on the new 2x, I wonder if it will be better IQ over the previous 2 on the 70-200? I'd take one if so...

The new lens is launching at $1500 US, same price as the 100-400, which retails here at around $2900.

New 500 and 600 under development. So why nothing on 24-70 or 100-400.
Wonder how much of this has to do with the increased size in sensors?

New 200F2 and now a 400F2.8

Wouldnt want to buy an old 500 when its released.......... parts maybe geting hard to find.
1 would need to check the date stamp.

100-400L is retailing street price at $1600US (RRP $1800), $1500 is the 70-300's rrp, so expect street US prices of what $1200-1300 ?

So prehaps $1800-1900 realisitcaly then, too much I think.

I guess canons strong point is the super tele's and they likely all get made on the same production line?

The super teles are their flagships. They were always going to upgrade them all to the 200/f2 standard with new IS.

Interesting that nobody (Canon, Nikon or Sigma) have added IS to their 24-70 yet. Maybe there are technical problems still to overcome at this focal length range...
