I saw some photographers on the ice after the Stanley Cup finals and they had on Canon white lenses, they were relatively short (physical length not focal length).

The 400 DO, 300 2.8 and the 200 2.0 and 1.8 are kinda short.

We are gonna need a better description than that though.

I'll look for a picture on the internet, while others chime in.
Is the 70-200 2.8 one of the shorter "white" lenses?

It's not much longer than the f/4. Fatter, yes, longer, not a whole lot.

The 70-200 f/2.8 IS is 7.7 inches long.

The 70-200 f/4 IS is 6.8 inches long. That'd be your winner (along with the non-IS), but it's still less than an inch shorter than the f/2.8.

The 200 f/2 is next shortest to the 70-200 zooms, at 8.2 inches.
