i recently sold my 17-40 and now i'm in the market for a new lens. i was initially leaning towards the 16-35 for better low light performance.

but now i'm looking at the 24-70. i def want 2.8 or faster. i'm looking to spend $1500. i'm looking to use the lens i pick up as a primary walk around lens. i do shot automotive, events, parties, etc...so i'm wondering which of the two lenses would be more appropriate.

based on my current gear below, what lens would you suggest?

TIA

You might consider the 17-55. It's at a constant f2.8 and has IS, great for low light. But it's at pretty much the same focal length as your old one, so I dunno how you feel 'bout that.
It's not an L, but I've only heard good things about it.

Try out some primes.

35L is a must need in any event/party/auto photographer's book.
and a 20 2.8 would be another lens you could grab, too.
or
24 1.4 and a 35 2.0!

Don't think that is going to work on a 5D :)

24-70 L. thats what i use as my general purpose lens on my 5D. love the IQ & build but on the heavy side. would pair up well with your 70-200.

That len will do no good for him maybe because the fact it is a EF-S mount and based on his signature he has a 5d and that only accepts EF mounts only.

I will def get the 24-70 f 2.8

Canon 5d with 24-105mm and a Canon 28-135mm which stays in the bag all the time. Canon 50mm F1.4 PRIME

for a 5d, if you don't have a 24-70 then go for it, great walkaround. the 17-40 is a little wide for a walkaround (unless that suits your shooting style).

Get the 16-35 and 24-70... just kidding.

Go with the 24-70 as it's more flexible with what you're shooting. Besides, the 24-70 has magical powers when paired with full frame.

It will depend on what you like to shoot in "walk around". The issue with 24-70 for walk around is its size and weight. For me, it is the only reason I wasn't using it as much as I like. I ended up selling it and use 24-105 as walk around. And then I found I shoot a good majority of the picture at 24mm. Not sure if it is really 24mm that I use the most or it is just I cannot go wider with this lens. Now I am looking to get 16-35. I want to find out just which range I will use the most.
