I was shopping the price for an XSi extra body and have found that I can buy one new from a site called fotoconnection.com for less than most people are selling used. There is now a Father's Day Discount of 5% (free shipping and no tax except for NY) bringing price to $474 (before NY's tax). I can't vouch for the site but I did buy the body....

Well, we'll see how it goes. I got an e-mail to call and others had PM'd me to beware of requests to upgrade, add on etc. "George" tried to sell me (but nicely, I must add) memory cards and lenses. When I declined he asked if I wanted to "upgrade to a US model with US accessories." I told him I thought it was a USA model for $25 more and he said no, though it had a USA warranty. I told him I wanted to cancel the order and he immediately said that as a 1st time customer he'd upgrade the purchase at not additional charge and that I'd get a USA model and that when the order shipped my e-mail would indicate this.... we'll see.....

The thing I've always heard with sites like these is they try to up sell you, OR they sell you a camera body with no batteries, battery door, strap, viewfinder, cmos chip etc. If you say no you don't want any of that, it goes in to backorder limbo...

But having said that, my boss bought a video camera and a slr from one of these companies and they tried to upsell him the world, which he flatly refused, and he received his cameras just fine.

Ok....here's what happened. The camera arrived today (day after I ordered it). It is NOT a US model (it it labeled 450D, not XSi) but otherwise looks just fine and came with a Canon battery and charger, manual, cables, strap etc. No card. Battery made in Japan (as was the battery that came with my 1st XSi). Charger needs a cable to plug to wall rather than plugging directly to the wall (of course my old charger works perfertly), but for $474 +NYS tax, and with a 1 year Canon warranty, I'm OK with it. If this George fellow hadn't warned me, I might not even have noticed. I've written a note to Canon to verify that with the receipt, I do in fact have a 1 year warranty. Will keep you posted.
Stephanie
p.s. for those who asked why I just didn't choose a different model-- I'm planning a fall trip to the Galapagos and want as a back up a camera I know already. Don't want any additional learning curve right now.

Unfortunately, if it isn't a US model, canon won't cover it under their US warranty.
It falls to the seller to offer any warranty. Some big shops like B&H and Adorama are fine for this, but through these people, you probably won't get much if any service.

You are probably right but the camera does seem to be fine. Canon says that "the 450D is the foreign equivalent to the Rebel XSi. Technically that means you are not covered by warranty here in the
United States, but if an issue did arise, you could send the camera to
us with a copy of your receipt, and the service center would make the
final call about what happens with your case. "

The store says that the warranty is a store warranty and that they'll stand behind it.
I noticed, going back to their website, that what is actually pictured on the site is the XSi, not the 450D (just the logo on the camera is different) so I wrote the Better Business Bureau requesting that fotoconnection replace the 450D with an XSi. We'll see what happens.

I really can live just fine with the 450D and it sounds as if Canon would at least consider doing any repair. And, of course, most cameras don't need repairs under warranty at all--it's accidental damage that's only covered by good extended warranties that account for the bulk of camera repairs. Hopefully, I won't need to learn this lesson the hard way.

You reported them. That's like complaining about a pyramid scam. THey change their name and come back. Fotoconnection actually used to be bananaboatcamera.com I believe. Name changes all the time and life goes on. Sometimes you get lucky, most don't. Still don't see why you got the exact same camera. Get a Ti at least. No more curve but more features.

Well, I reported them because, as a retired attorney, just letting stuff like this go boils my blood. I know folks don't get why I got the same body , but I could get it for a reasonable price ($300 more for a T1i body) and put more of my $ into a new lens. We are headed to the Galapagos and great glass is more important to me right now. :-)
