I think they are too busy trying to figure out how to cram more MP in the G11 and 60D

heh lol yeah probably! would be good if they can get the next in the G series a significantly larger sensor(maybe even 4/3" lol) without boosting the MP(or maybe even decreasing it although i cant see how canon would never do that) for better low light performance.

I was reading the interview with the Olympus product developer on dpreview and he states that the digicam to dslr market is 10:1 and 20% of digicam owners want a dslr but that is smaller and easier to use. He therefore theorizes that the potential market for a digicam sized camera with dslr IQ is twice as big as that for dslr.

I really like the concept and the execution of the Pen. I think it's missing a few things. An EVF, faster AF, a flash, higher resolution LCD, and a slightly lower price. The product developer states that they are already working on a model with an EVF. Panasonic's GH1 has a much faster contrast based AF system, so maybe they will fix this with a firmware in the future. Panasonic is already working on a smaller micro 4/3 sensor camera like the Pen as well.

I think this is what Canon's G11 should be. I can't see them sticking even more MP's into that little sensor, so why not a bigger sensor.

Err, shouldn't this be in some kind of other cameras section?

You want them to make a small camera with a very limited lens selection, no viewfinder and it still won't fit in your pocket? This is a very niche camera. I bet the Canon G10 and Canon Rebels (or G11) outsells the Olympus PEN 50 to 1. Maybe even 100 to 1. Canon doesn't need a niche product because they are too busy making top selling mainstream products.

Nah.... The G 11 will be 30 mp with a high ISO of 24000
and no noise.......with a zoom of 10mm to 500 mm...
And sell for $350.00 USD...

Cheers, Don

True, like a Honda or a Nissan.... But sometimes you just have to have the Ferrari and truth be known, the G-series will just never be a Ferrari with that 4 cylinder under its hood. I like the camera, but times and expectations are changing. If they don't change with it they will lose at least one customer in there compact market.

I did hear a rumour that Canon are working on a compact/compact sized camera with a larger sensor due around Christmas. I'm only relaying what I heard on canonrumours. Whether it's true is anyones guess. I do think Canon need to start using a larger sensor in a high end compact otherwise they may lose a segment of the market.

The G series will always appeal to those who want DSLR style control in a compact body but don't want the hassle of interchangable lenses but there's no doubting the E-P1 (and similar ones that follow) will eat a little away at the G series sales.

I dunno if ferrari is the right analogy for the E-P1, maybe Mazda Miata? :)

I agree, there is a market for niche products, but the money is probably peanuts compared to what canon is making with their $100-400 compact line. Canon MAY respond with a APS-C camera, but only if some market share gets snatched. That kinda seems how canon works - just the minimum effort to maintain market lead. Usually they let others test out the waters before they jump in.

personally, I think it is a mistake to try and use SLR sensors and interchangeable lenses. There is just only so small you can go. I'd rather a short F2 collapsible zoom, or f1.4 fixed pancake lens on a sensor about half the size of APS-C. It would stll be 3x the size of the G10 sensor, but allow for some more compact designs while providing a 1-2 stop noise gain and a little more DOF control.

Many of the sample pics were shot @ ISO 200 in "Auto" mode, because that's the lowest ISO the camera will choose in that mode and they looked GREAT to me, even the high ISO shots were fantastic with that big sensor. Would love to see some manually set samples at ISO 100. The video samples looked great as well. This camera definitely has my curiosity, I want to play with one NOW!!

Dear lord it destroys it at high iso... iso 2400 (see here)
http://www.imaging-resource.com …/YEP1P6160179_ISO2500.HTM (external link)
looks better on the Oly than iso 800 on the Canon.

And with the 17mm pancake it doesn't look much bigger. see below link
