Is their any websites that have any good info explaining which lenses and adapters can be used with the E-P1? Specifically concerning older manual focus lenses. Or even the GF1.

More or less any lens in existence that can cover a 4/3 sensor with the image circle can be used on micro 4/3 cameras. The only caveat is those with extremely deep rear elements that come very close to the sensor...they may hit the mount, and also those that don't hit, but are still very close have corner smearing due to the angle of incidence. However, the vast majority of lenses will fit the E-P1. Leica M, Leica thread mount, C mount cinema lenses (those with a large enough circle), Oly Pen F mount, pretty much ALL SLR lenses, etc (though if you mount EF lenses, you have no aperture control). Canon FD, Nikon, Canon EF, Leica R, Olympus OM, M42, Pentax K, etc, etc, etc. It's pretty much a universal camera. :)

Don't you need an adapter....are not the mounts different between all those lenses?

Yes. I use adapters for my Canon and Olympus dSLRs.

I thought Canon FD adapters require a corrective lens (for the 4/3 and EOS adapters at least).

Just an adapter ring for all the others. I use just Nikon-F mount lenses on mine so far. :D

As far as I know, NO mount period requires optics to convert to m4/3. The only reason FD requires it to EOS is because FD has a shorter flange distance than EOS...m4/3 is shorter than any camera (with a sensor of its size or larger) ever made.

Do you know the flange depth of the m4/3 system?

This is the most complete list I have seen, but it is not yet updated to include m4/3:

$2000 happens to be exactly the price I was expecting the X1 to be.

They are great images!

The images have a very distinct colour style, is this what is referred to the the 'Leica look' ? Is this common amoungst Leica cameras?

Has anyone performed the firmware update (external link) to the E-P1 and lenses? I was wondering what effect it has on improving the autofocus operations?

I did, and I didn't notice a big change with single shot AF. Then again I was content with how it performed in bright light with v1.0, so whatever improvement they managed in v1.1 isn't enough to make a big difference for me. In low light I'm pretty confident in saying there's no improvement, while in bright light with the 14-42 I think I see some improvement, but it's still not speedy. I think it might rack the focus a little less, hence the faster AF. With 17mm pancake it was plenty fast anyway, so if there's any improvement there I couldn't tell you.

With continuous AF it seems to make smaller adjustments while trying to keep the subject in focus than in v1.0, but it still wanders off target too much to be reliable.

But don't take my experience as typical. I've seen a range of impressions on AF speed on the DPReview Micro 4/3 forum, so I could very well be in the minority in not noticing a big improvement.

Well, in nice light the 17mm is as fast as it needs to be....very nice at all distances...even from close to far...
The 14-42 is better but still nothing to write home about. But....there is a marked improvement with both in hunting....there is minimal hunting now and that makes the AF faster...
It also is more precise...
I personally am disappointed that no other issues were addressed, other than the sleep mode. It works now and didn't before....

Many can't wait for the next upgrade but I am skeptical in thinking that it will ever come. With the EP-2 in the near future....I think the EP-1 is as good as it gets...
I really hope I'm wrong but don't think so...

What was wrong with it before? I have mine set to 1 minute and it seems to work fine--goes to sleep at 1 minute the way it should.

One thing I'd love to see addressed is the Fn button functions not being available anywhere else. For example, you can set the Fn button to turn off the LCD, custom white balance, etc. If you set it to turn off the LCD, there's no other way to set custom white balance because the Fn button is already assigned to turning off the LCD. That's pretty shoddy design. Those other functions need to be menu-accessible.

Buy for what it is, not for what it might be. If its limitations are problematic, don't buy it with the hope that they'll "fix" those limitations further down the road. Like you I'm skeptical there will be a significant functionality improvement in the next firmware upgrade and don't mind because I knew about its shortcomings ahead of time and didn't buy hoping that it would somehow get better later on.

Don't read me wrong....I love the camera. The firmware has improved things with the AF.
I really wanted but knew I wouldn't get a focus scale.

I use the FN button for the screen on/off. WB I set to auto as I do with every digicam. The software will correct better than the camera anyway.

Before on many cameras, the sleep mode would turn the camera off and not to sleep. You had to power back up to get going again. Now it works as it should and awakes with 1/2 press.

All in all it's a great camera and I have found my way with it. I am producing some wonderful images with it and that's happening every time I take her out....
that is what it's all about....

Don

Cheers, Don
