According to this: http://www2.panasonic.com …11002_7000000000000005702 (external link)
The Panny has IS in the provided 20mm 1.7 lens, I think?

That greatly increases the value if true.

The only negative I could find is that unlike the Canon G series cameras and other Panny point and shoots, I guess because it's an interchangable lens it won't adjust to macro and one of the things I really love about the G series is using the macro at the wide end of the lens and then moving right in extremely close, rather stunning images can be obtained this way. I'm wondering if there is a Panny extension tube that can be used with this setup?

Am I right that the 20mm 1.7 lens that comes with the camera is IS?

^^I don't know. I've heard that it's just the 45mm macro that'll come stocked with IS. Who knows? I might be wrong.

I'm not seeing where it says that, Jannie. Mega OIS is mentioned in the section about iA mode, but right below it it says that not all functions are available in all lenses.

It'd be great if the 20mm has IS (I plan to get one because of the f/1.7), but I haven't seen that mentioned anywhere definitively. And given the small size of the 20mm in the pic of it that's circulated, I would think it wouldn't fit. Also, I would think the IS would be highly touted if it were included, but it doesn't seem to be.

This is directly from that page I posted the link above to which talks about the camera and 20mm f 1.7 pancake lens. Its almost a deal breaker for me if I do buy a camera this size if the pancake lenses do not have IS, in this day and age, a point and shoot without IS seems retro and I find tiny cameras less stable than my DSLR. The IS in the G series cameras is pretty fantastic, I was able to really do some neat stuff at slow shutter speeds because of it.

MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer)
Gyrosensors built into the lens detect hand-shake and an O.I.S. shifts to compensate. Assisting you in getting those clear, beautiful, blur-free photos.

*Some functions in iA mode will not be available depending on the lens that is mounted.

But then I read this review on the lens and they do not mention IS anywhere: http://www.photoreview.com.au …g-20mm-f17-asph-lens.aspx (external link)

I think we need some advertising that clears this up, or they are possibly avoiding mentioning this, knowing it to be a negative whether they think IS is needed or not, public opinion is more likely to be otherwise.

CHeck the specs on the lens. 3rd row says "optical stabilization - No"

http://www2.panasonic.com …00000000005702#tabsection (external link)

I think what you read is saying that it can do IS if you have the right lens, but since this is for the GF1+20mm kit, it is somewhat misleading. Luckily at f1.7 you will rarely need IS.

This is becoming more of a wait-and-see camera, but I really want to want it; like the LX-3, after the newness wore off no one seemed to be jumping up and down about it's image quality anymore, it seemed to blend in with the rest once the shiny wore off. That said, I'm a big fan of Panasonic, but if the 20mm f1.7 just turns out to be a cheap kit lens and we don't know until we get one and then have to get something else, it would be a definite no-no, I can understand the zoom being a kit quality lens but not the pancake, just my opinion so we'll find out. There is no point buying this camera if the IQ is not stellar, might as well just get a regular point and shoot for maybe half to 2/3rds the price instead.

I'm waiting on some in depth reviews on the GF-1 and if it looks as I expect then I'm getting one with both the 14-45 and the 20/1.7 for my wife for Christmas. She hates using my 5D + 24-105L (this is my 'small' camera) and we really need something in the P&S genre. I'm not willing to go smaller than 4:3rds sensors, so the GF-1 fits the bill.

The only other option is the EP-1 which lack of internal flash kills for the wife or the M9 which is crazy money. Plus my wife would probably hate the function of a rangefinder.

The 20mm pancake does not have IS.

Early samples show it to be at least a decent lens, and really if you're getting it in a kit with the GF1 I personally think there's no better combo in this market segment, taking into account all factors such as design/form-factor, sensor size, functionality, and price.

Hopefully Panasonic can buck the trend and actually deliver product in quantity to the U.S. instead of the shortages they've experienced with their last few popular products.

Anyone know how much that 45mm Panny/Leica macro lens is going to cost?

Please realize this photo is massively misleading, given that the GF1 is the same size as the E-P1...not 40% smaller as shown in this photoshopped image.

What are you guys talking about?

The Panasonic actually looks like a real camera.

And I think the E-P1 looks quite like a real camera...especially with a nice lens on it:

The 20 does not have IS. So with the internal IS of the EP1, it gets IS.
The GF1 is something to look at but the Pen is the one for making photos.
I adore mine....

looks are subjective, but why are you hinting the EP is the better camera in terms of images? I've been impressed by the samples I've seen from both and the pani sounds like it's faster in terms of funtions?

Yeah, I did not mean to imply that the Panasonic was smaller, only that I prefer the looks of it to the Olympus. Sounds like I may be in the minority.

I think both will have similar sensors with very similar quality. The difference will mainly be controls and of course the EP1 has IS, while the GF1 has a flash and faster AF.
